Thank you everyone who has posted a message, its been quite overwhelming by everyones views and thoughts on specific areas. There sounds like there's plenty of areas to cater for.
It wasnt untill a few weeks ago that i had quite stereotype imagine portrayed of Manchester where there would just be gangs of chavs and crime going on before your eyes, expecting it to be quite run down. But have been pleasantly surprised, although dont get me wrong like every town/city there are the known places you try to avoid, but as well as all your comments mentioning more welcoming places than i was expecting to hear (as i thought there would only be couple of option all being fairly highly budgeted)
Thanks again everyone, although keep any suggestions coming if you have anything else to say on the matter

I grew up in Cornwall and moved to Manchester at 24yrs old (although did go via Sheffield/ Scotland to study first). Five years later, I can honestly say that I wouldn't live anywhere else now. The stereotypes that you mention do exist to an extent, but as others have mentioned, Manchester also has so, so many positives that so long as you have your head screwed on, you'll be fine. I've never been mugged or burgled since I've lived here *touch wood*
Back to your original question, I can recommend city centre living- I live in the Northern Quarter (no need to run a car, I just hire a car when I go back to Cornwall). Various friends of mine live in Prestwich, Chorlton & Didsbury, and I can recommend all these areas.0 -
I have to say I agree with most of the previous comments. I just can't believe nobody has mentioned Stretford yet! But I am slightly biased as that's where I live. I moved there 7 years ago, when I was 23 (I was in London before) and wouldn't want to go anywhere else. It's easy access to the city centre (20mn by bus or tram and you get night buses too), motorway, Trafford Centre, Old Trafford if you're that way inclined, etc... It's cheaper than the city centre so if budget is an issue, I'd definitely recommend it.
If your budget is not so much of an issue, I'd definitely recommend Castlefield as it's lovely, lively and a short walk to the centre.
Also, maybe one more thing for you to consider, if you drive, have a look at the congestion charge rings and transport proposals as this could be in place in a few years...0 -

We have moved to Stretford in the last year. I have only one complaint .. the lack of cheap AND good Indian and Chinese takeaway food. I have never tasted worse anywhere else in Manchester!0 -

Thanks hugbubble, your situation sounds quite alike to mine (minus the studying part as yet) but from what i can make out theres not too much difference from the way of life in cornwall and devon down in the southwest (although im sure True proud cornish/devoners could take offence to that)
Nice but not all you want at the age of 24, especially from what i can make of manchester. Now in the process of checking out in more detail, the so far mentioned places and researching which would be best for myself. Thanks again to everyone who has posted on this subject it has been much appreciated. Will let you know how things pan out, as i will probably have more questions to be answered concerning manchester

There is a really good website, called up my street (or something along those lines ) gives you loads of information, on crime figures, average ages and incomes of current residents. I moved to Manchester, from a small town in my early 20's, not being able to afford the city centre, or, Didsbury for that matter I got a houseshare in Heaton Mersey, cheap but sharing with 3 others just wasn't for me! Me and a friend started looking for a flat, in our budget £500 a month and all were tiny or just generally not nice, we ended up finding a place in Wythenshawe a brand new 2 bed house with secure parking, garden, more than we could every wish for, we were both concerned with the area, although ended up staying there for 3 years and never had a problem apart from the fact I just felt a bit out of touch (not that it is far from the city centre, but nothing much there, and pretty poor transport links!) We have now moved to Sale, got a 3 bed terrace for £595 pcm, and absolutely loving it, 2 mins walk from the metro link, and the centre of sale (which has loads of nice bars and restaurants) and £7 for a taxi into town, much more on our doorstep, beautiful walks along the canal, also close to Altricham, which also has good bars and restaurants. City centre living for me now, wouldn't appeal, I love being close, but still able to go for a walk with the dog and see some beautiful countryside!
Check out https://www.rightmove.co.uk also to see what is available in each area and for what price!! Good luck in your search!!0 -
up my street brilliant help>0

I like didsbury myself.....quite posh and not too far from the centre0

Sale another good area. Not as cool as Chorlton or Didsbury (more families than Dinkies) and a bit further out, though that said, it is much quicker to get into the centre as it is right on the tram line. Sale - Manc 10-15 mins. I live in Sale and think it is under-rated. It has fantastic restaurants, good shops, and arts centre and some nice pubs and it is cheaper than Chorlton or Didsbury.
That said, I love Chorlton (I lived there for a while) and Didsbury used to be nice before all the chains bought out the lovely independent shops and bars. When I moved to Sale from Chorlton my house insurance halved.
City centre wise, I'd look at Castlefield, Northern Quarter and near to GMex there is City South and a few other blocks of flats. I reckon you'd get a good deal if you haggled. A friend of mine sold her place in City South last year after the place half emptied in repossessions, but it's a good location with parking, and only 10 mins walk into Manc. I second what was said about being the wrong side of Piccadily and I'd avoid anywhere that falls into East Manchester until the area has proved itself.
I have also lived in studenty Withington (I lived in a road that was about half rented houses and half families), which was fantastically cheap and convenient, with cheap buses all through the night and only a 10 min bike ride to Manc. It is however a bit more down market than some of the other areas mentioned.
There are loads of city centre flats though, and I think for £500-600 pcm you could find a nice one with parking.MF date: Dec [STRIKE]2028[/STRIKE] 2019. Overpayments in 2007=£900, 2008=£1200 2009=234000 -
If your budget is not so much of an issue, I'd definitely recommend Castlefield as it's lovely, lively and a short walk to the centre...
As a previous poster has mentioned the canal towpaths into castlefield are unlit in places. I wouldnt want a girl walking on her own down them at night. But they are the main footpath into town so are pretty much always busy even at silly hours on a saturday night.
Northern quarter is a bit more edgy but still trendy IMO. It's got some great bars.0
