good point stevie sorry bud, basically
-dont really have any baggage single 24/m
-looking for a totally change of life from what we devoners have down here lol,
-would like to be fairly close to the center as this is really the only area im quite used to
-i guess i would like to be close to nightlife, but at the same time id like to be in an area which is safe to get around as i find my feet0 -
I would say castlefield would be ideal for you based on that. Plus there are so many free flats you can basically pick & choose. Don't believe the prices advertised. It's quiet and you don't have far to walk to town. Plus you'll get parking (unlikely in city centre).0

You need to get streetwise - don't carry purse in top of open bag, don't walk down dark alleys, don't go places you don't know at night on your own, don't use your phone in public.
The nice areas are often studenty and this makes them often more popular with the crims as they have a plentiful supply of fodder.0 -

Is your new job in the city centre?
If so, you can look at all city centre locations. I don't think a car is important or necessary if you work and live in the centre, so parking irrelevant.
Following that, and taking into consideration your reply above, I'd recommend Didsbury/Chorlton. Didsbury is nicer and slightly more accessible to town (frequent busses inc. night buses, especially #42, train from East Didsbury station), although more expensive and commercial than Chorlton (too many chains). Chorlton is more arty and alternative, slightly cheaper. I personally favour Chorlton, there some good local shops (grocers, bakers, fishmongers), cafes & bars and some nice restaurants. Nicest is around Beech Road and that side of Chorlton.
Good luck! I can assure you Manchester is very different to Devon:rolleyes: (but in a good way!)0 -
Ok, now we know a bit about you/what you want, what's your budget?
There are also a couple of areas just outside manchester to the north/east that are ok, I'd suggest Droylsden and Failsworth as viable. £450ish for a 2 bed terraced, both have direct buses into the city centre running every 5-10 mins in rush hour and fairly late at night. Failsworth has a decent number of pubs/bars and a few nice eateries. Also between these 2 is Daisy Nook/Medlock vale country parks for a bit of fresh air. Both are about 6 miles for the centre.0 -
Didsbury is very studenty, but busy and bustley so pretty safe - the buses there are really good also - and super cheap. It is very very studenty though, so if you don't want noise etc then be wary - but you are likely to find a house share here if you don't want to live on your own.
A little further out, but may find something cheaper and more spacious - perhaps try Stockport or Ashton-U-Lyne. Both have nice/bad parts, but thats the same as anywhere accross the country. Good thing about Stockport is its on 192 Bus route which is pretty cheap (not as cheap as the buses to Didsbury) and frequent (2/3 mins Mon-Fri). Trains are good to.
I lived in Salford for the past two years, near to Salford Uni - I haven't had any problems living there, but I try and be safe (not on mobile on street etc). Buses are more expensive to Salford than to Didsbury/192 route, but there are some pretty bits a bit further off the main part of Salford.

I went to school in Swinton and second the comments about the trains being a nightmare at peak times. Eccles can be a bit rough around the pubs but is good for commuting via the tram link. Monton and Worsley were always considered posh (I'm going back 15 years, here) and there are some nice one-bed flats available for rental. Monton is a short walk to Eccles for the tram (although the walk's not recommended after a night out). Worsley is a bit more out in the sticks and you'd have to walk for a train or hop on a bus. Clifton is also nice and within walking distance of the station at Swinton, but then you have issue about the trains on top of a 20 minute walk. My sister still lives there, and she says Swinton's not as nice as it used to be but it's still pretty safe.
Salford proper, Little Hulton, Walkden, Wardley, Pendlebury, Agecroft I would avoid until you've found your feet locally.
Having said all that, I now live in a 'regeneration area' of Glasgow because I moved here as a 24 year old on £12k a year, and couldn't afford anything else. I'm still here at 31, mortgage almost paid off after getting a couple of promotions, and a £5 taxi ride home from nights out means that I've had a great time living here. I don't go wandering about this area after dark, or to any of the local pubs, but I've never been burgled and can afford to go out in town when I fancy it. It depends what you want/need from where you're living.
My dad lives in Didsbury which is regarded as posh but there is a lot of theft and malicious damage type crime. It's never been the same since Richard & Judy went to London  .
Good luck and enjoy living in Manchester, there is loads to see and do in the city centre during the day and night, and you don't need a car to get out for day trips etc as the train network in the North West is pretty good.I joined the 21k debt free in 2 years head to head challenge 12 December 06

Lots of North Manchester are fine, ignore sdooley on that point, Bury, Prestwich areas are decent and have metro and bus links0

To find out current prices go onto www.spareroom.co.uk
Type in your area then click "rooms wanted"
Click "search"
On the right hand side in blue writing there is a link saying "check average rents in this area"Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:0 -

Would agree with this 100% i grew up in North Manchester and NEVER felt unsafe, My father in law lives in Simister (not far from Prestwich) and my parents live in Alkrington which is where i grew up and is lovely.
We now live in North Wales (moved her 6 years ago due to work commitments) but travel back to manchester on a weekly basis and are 2 weeks away from completion of the sale of our property, we are moving back to Manchester (Denton to be specific) with our 20 month old daughter.
Manchester is not unlike any other city - there are plenty of unsafe areas but if you have your head screwed on you shouldn't have a problem.
