you should automatically get a student id card for free when you start uni, this can be used to prove you're a student and therefore get you student discounts in some stores (off the top of my head there's Topshop, Topman etc, Office (shoes), New Look, Zavvi and lots more- its always worth asking) and you'll also get student student rate on cinema tickets etc.
or do you mean an nus extra? you have to pay for this- think its around a tenner. you can apply online- my uni had computers set up ready for applying in freshers week. some shops are now insisting on one of these rather than your uni's own card in order to get your discount, and also if you're shopping online its useful as you get a number which you can use to qualify for discount- i think amazon have some kind of nus offer. depends on your spending habits though as to whether its worth you getting one. look it up on google to find their site and it'll tell you which companies give you discount.
i think some travel companies will offer student rates/discounts. if you want money off rail travel though you need a young person's railcard- anyone under 25 can get one and they cost £24 giving you a third off fares for a year. Natwest give a free 5year one with their student account- really useful but i know people who never received theirs, think they only have a limited supply or something.0 -
im not going to uni, im going to college.

The only thing thats national to help with travel is the 16-25 railcard which gives upto 1/3 off train fares.
Travel on buses will be dependent on the local area. Like in my area I could get 1/2 price travel while I was still in Full Time Education. Now I am at Uni I get fares reduced even further but thats only because my Uni has their own bus company which gets subsidised for students. So you will be best off contacting your local bus company to see if they give any discount for students, some areas won't.0 -
Quite honestly, The student cards are alright to have, they give you a little bit. But.... The cinema is pathetic, monday to thursday nights only, and with 2-4-1 on wednesday and cheap nights on tuesday makes it practically worthless.
And 10% off stuff at some stores, normally the ones that are overpriced anyway... but then again, i guess its every little helps.
There isnt anything for free, and you even have to pay for a student card. (NUS extra)0 -

Must be your cinema, the odeon around here let you go any day and any time of the week using student discount. You can even get student discount on Orange Wednesdays so you get the 2 for 1 tickets at the student price.0 -
yeah, im afraid odeon are a dying breed to the cineworld culture. I went with my gf last week to see the dark knight (fantastic by the way) and it was £13 just for the tickets, then the popcorn on top.
As to the other question in the first post, yeah, there are just a few travel benefits on the train, but thats it? (its overpriced anyway, buy a car... and to hell with the environment)0 -
if your college is registered with NUS then you will be able to get a NUS extra card for £10 which will give you discounts at certain high street and online stores. as for travel, you can get a 16-25 railcard or contact your local council and ask to be put through to the education department, most councils will sell you a travelpass at a discount rate if you are going to college but it depends on how far away you live from your college.
hope this helps and good luck with your course!
