What kind of design course is he on?
Ive just done a graphic design / web design course and Ive been doing wonderfully with the Macbook (black one). Had no need for the pro.
You only need the pro if your doing animation type things, or just web design.
Plus you have no need for anything bigger than a 13", trust me.
And laptop is definately worth it, makes it easier to take in every day and not have to worry about software compatibility as you do all the work on your compGreen and White Barmy Army!0 -
I did wonder how he was going to carry an iMac under his arm into the uni

To be honest that is just really subjective to each person. Some can work with 13" no problem whilst others (like me) dont like to work on that size and I dont even do Design work:D
Thats why I recommended the Op and Son get a hands on look at the Macbooks before purchasing.
They might find it perfectly suitable or they may not, but its better to do this before purchasing than the hassle of returning stuff.0 -
Hi,
Being a owner and user of both a macbook and macbookpro i find both as good as each other the macbook 13' screen is fine unless you really are going to use full screen of a pro stick with a macbook.
If you need a bigger screen i use my 1080p LCD tv via dvi and it works a treat0 -

Stop boasting about your LCD:p:D0 -
A Macbook is a pretty solid piece of kit but a Macbook Pro I feel would be worth the extra investment. I work fine with my mid-range Macbook but I do plan on getting an external monitor for when I start college (and do art graphics as one of my options).
As for the education discount it's 100% worth it, and I think the discount works out you getting more than a price of an iPod. In the US they give away iPods Touches around this time purely for decreasing stock levels in time for their new iPod line in September (where you'll probably get a lot more for your money).
As for Applecare (I chose not to go for it, even with the student discount) you may want to check on eBay before buying it. When you purchase Applecare you are pretty much purchasing a box containing a unique serial number which you then register. Therefore people sell the sealed boxes on eBay and are affectively selling you Applecare. I'm not sure if they go for cheaper than the educational price but it's probably worth checking.0 -
personally, i could never design on a 13" screen, and struggle on the 15" screen of my MBPro...
the beauty about both laptops are that you can plug in a bigger screen and use that, obviously when at student house, but not while at uni....
