Please help, I think laptop's got a virus!

Help!!!

My laptop has been slowing down over the last few days, there is definately a problem with it. Every time I search for something in google it comes up with random sites that look like the real thing bt aren't, for example, if I search 'MSE' I would normally expect to find the MSE link with direct links to some forums.....this still comes up but the link in green is deals.infospot.co.uk// instead of the MoneySavingExpert direct link. The next hit is for UK.findstuff.com, there's loads of them!

I ran an Ad-Aware scan on it yesterday and a trend housecall scan and I did a TrendicroHijack log which I'll stick on the end of this message.

Just now something just popped up, I don't know if it's genuine or not saying my system is compromised with viruses called Backdoor:Win32/NTRoot, Backdoor:Win32/Sivuxa and Trojan.Caiijing, it's asking me to add on something which don't want to do incase I do more damage.

I've left it all open waiting for me to click summat, what do I do :eek:

Did the Trend Housecall scan not pick up any problems?

What exactly popped up?
What anti-virus software are you running? Also what firewall do you use?

If you want to find out about a virus, the https://www.symantec.com is a good site although it doesn't list Sivuxa.
Personally I use AVG free edition which you can download from

Trend Housecall didn't find any problems.

Vista Antivirus 2008 popped up saying I might be at risk, then that page froze with a little red warning box saying about the Backdoor and Trojan alerts and asking me to download something by clicking the bar at the top of the page. I'm presuming (maybe wrongly :rolleyes:) that this is a dodgy site in itself??

I am already running the free version of AVG and it did come up with a Trojan alert this morning.

I dont know anything about Vista but it looks like Vista Antivirus 2008 is spyware. Try searching for "vista antivirus 2008" in google.

Is your Ad-aware fully updated as I would expect it to deal with the problem.

That's the weird thing, everytime I go to scan with Ad-Aware, which is normally once a week, it asks me to search for updates. Well over the past 235 days it hasn't found an update should I re-install it?

I used a tool called SDFix on mine rescently which worked really well. You can search for it on google - free download.

Load it on your C: (or primary) drive then restart you pc in safe mode( press and hold F8 while the pc starts up for a few seconds)

select your operating system and log in to your normal account.

open the SDFix folder - click "runthis" then press "y" to start the scan and it will run i n DOS Format.

I would then run another scan after - AVG maybe, thats what I did and seems to work ok now......

To be fair its been a long time since I ran it (must do that!) but it always used to update whne I tried. Have you checked on the Lavasoft website that your version isn't obsolete?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
• If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
• On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
• The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
• The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
