I need an electrician.

I have a 'trip' fuse board and the upstairs lighting circuit occasionally trips for no apparant reason.

Where do I start?

NO alterations have been carried out except to change a couple of light bulbs a LONG time before this started.

i would guess the first thing would be to check tightness of all the switch connections and if nothing then progress on to the light fittings? After that, perhaps the junction boxes in the loft.

Seems a long winded method though, so how would a leccy find the fault?

Now, I know that a light, with a loose/faulty earth will trip this kind of fuse whereas the earlier type would carry on regardless so how else can I check for loose connections or breaks in the cable?

Perhaps a mouse got hungry? How would I discover that it'd had a nibble without removing all of the insul in the loft and inspecting the wires.

Please don't suggest paying for a leccy as I prefer to learn and fault find myself.
