    I feel that opening the mail is fine if it averts the threat of someone turning up.

    Except of course that debt collectors are no threat:
    "I'm sorry, I'm not the person you're looking for. I don't know where they are. You have to leave now, you're trespassing". *close door*

    Why should he have to deal with the problem? I am constantly harassed by debt collectors chasing money from the previous person who lived at my current address. We've been here for 3 years and I've called them and even forwarded the persons new address but STILL they harass me by letter and come to my address. If it continues to happen the problem isn't dealt with is it??? It's the previous owner that racks me off because she is fully aware of the problems I've been having! And as for the legal aspects of opening mail from previous owners? I think harassment is also illegal too!!
