Thought I would share this with people on here. If you make little or no calls, but still want a (BT) phoneline then this is the way to go: http://www.bt.com/customerservices/cust_details.jsp?parentcat=cs_lu_scheme&childcat=how_it_works

As long as nobody in the house has a mobile phone and you don't have/want broadband.
Your household is not eligible for the Light User Scheme if you have:
    • a telephone service provided by another supplier, either directly or indirectly
    • mobile telephone service
    • more than one telephone line at the same or different address, for example at a holiday home
    • a broadband (ADSL) line
    • a line used exclusively for a burglar alarm (this does not include 'lifeline' alarm systems which are also used as telephones)
    • an ISDN line or business lines
    • a payphone line, residential BT rented cardphone or temporary line
    • a line with incoming calls barred (i.e. your line only allows outgoing calls)
    • an incoming line only because you owe money to BT
    • BT Pay & Call
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

For people that genuinely do hardly use the phone, BT's In Contact Plus scheme may be interesting. It costs £9.25 per quarter, but has even more restrictive conditions.

  • I notice in the BT Light User Scheme conditions it says....

"Your household is not eligible for the Light User Scheme if you have:
a telephone service provided by another supplier, either directly or indirectly"

Does this mean I can't be on this scheme and user call1899 to make free phone calls?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

You would not be able to use 18866 (and I presume 1899 ) .

I know because I recently tried to set it up from my dad's phone (He was on Light User ) and it couldn't be done .
Without the rain you wouldn't have the rainbows !

I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left!

Thanks for the quick response. Having just cancelled ntl (coz 1899 introduced a 0.5p/min charge) it looks like BT opt 1 then for me.

You should be able to use 18866/1899 etc via their 0808 access numbers. BT won't like it if you do. But they probably won't actually notice if you do.

But you would be paying the cable/mobile rates instead of the 18866/1899 BT landline access rates.

You are correct. But there is however, the 'notional' saving on your line rental.

I'm not sure how they could tell if you have a mobile phone?

they just ask you " have you got a mobile phone " and you say yes or no .
If you want the light uses scheme you say I dont have a mobile phone .
I did have the light user scheme many years ago .
