I got a large peice of MDF and painted it!
That way it fitted my space exactly how I wanted it.
I have a small filing cabinet at one side and some crappy drawers on the other which is what holds it up!
sounds dodgy but works a treat... really big too.Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date

I had this one from Ikea at uni...it's 140*76, so should be big enough for most people. (much larger than similar ones from argos, staples et al, anyway)
At £39 it's hardly gonna break the bank, eit her.0 -

are kitchen tops heavier?
I didn't think of that myself.
diy stores sell large pieces of MDF for £15/£20 - my friend was away so I ended up getting mine delivered and cut to a specific size (I don't drive) so it cost me more but it's so big and a good thickness that it will last me for some time.
I painted it silver and white - I need a better varnish though as the small spray can wasn't very good.
but I did use a matt emulsion paint (I already had some at home) but you could paint/spray it with a better type of paint so you wouldn't need the varnish layer.
a few years back I made a desk using trestles (cheap to buy) and a large piece of MDF and covered it with some of that plastic sheeting stuff (I've gone blank on the name!!! laminate????) that comes in different colours and wood effects - usually for kitchen cupboards but I just glued it to the desk - lasted years.. and despite the description looked really good - my friends didn't know I had made it myself.Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date
