Christmas Temp Jobs

Options
(Not really sure where to put this, so feel free to move it)

Has anyone started putting in applications for Christmas jobs yet? I was going to go hunting on Monday to see. Don't really have a lot of options for near me, we have an Argos, Boots and Woolworths.

Does anyone know what sort of availability I'd need to be offered a job? I'm a student and already have a flexible hours part-time job for some evenings. Being able to work weekends would be great and then working more when university finishes for Christmas would be the ideal situation. Does this sound possible?

Alot of companies start recruting in Sept and do a number of intakes before xmas. They do tend to be flexible, as they have there own full time staff and just need the temps there for busy periods, i.e. late night shopping hours, weekend and then the dreaded Boxing day.

Haha, I usually avoid leaving the house on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day if at all possible! But if I'm going to be paid a fair bit to work it then I will.

I will definitely go ask on Monday then and see if they have any application forms. I know Argos have started taking them in.

I don't think you'll get paid 'a fair bit' to work it - I reckon they take on xmas staff to work cheap while the permanent staff - who could command overtime rates - get to stay home!

I applied for a few xmas jobs a couple of years ago and was surprised just how tough the applications and interviews were for what I thought was a tatty little job lasting a few months! They seemed to prefer people who were actually looking for permanent work, rather than just xmas work.

Anything over minimum wage will be good for me. Be better than what I currently get. I wouldn't complain about getting a weekend job out of it, or a summer job.
  • At Orange shop Taunton we're already recruiting for christmas people:

Have you considered Royal Mail? I remember seeing them advertising in my local area last Christmas for seasonal staff, it might be worth checking on their website to see if your local sorting office are recruiting over the festive period! Good Luck and I hope you find something.

Hi don't know if it helps but I used to work in the personnel dept at Sainsburys and they start their recruitment mid September, you would do well to join any of the big retail chains (no loyalty here!) preferably one which has a store close to Uni and also a store close to home, even if it means a bit of travelling, then you can do the same as a lot of my old work pals and get on a dual store contract, this way you carry on accruing rights and benefits as you continue the same permanent contract rather than starting and re-starting lots of temp contracts. You should also (eventually) get higher wages this way rather than staying on probationary rate all the time.

Unfortunately you will need to work all the graveyard shifts and Saturdays, don't know of any retail chain which lets you get out of that one, major reason I left! :D HTH.
SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)
  • Hi,

I am also looking to take on extra hours via a Christmas temp job. Woolies have started advertising and I've applied. Boots have started advertising - about to put in an application. Also the Card Factory. Worked with Argos a few years ago - needed extra stuff for our home - new washing machine etc, as an employee you get 10% discount. I did not make any money as I spent it, ended up with new TV, bedroom furniture, washing machine. Liked the work - was in the stockroom only - only draw back you get some lazy muppets!
