looking for a good dog insurance

  • My mini schnauzer is insured through Marks and Spencer - I think they came out top in a Which survey and I have to say they've been fab. She's only 10 months old and they've already paid out over £2000 on bills and the cover is for £7000 a year. Also the people in their call centres are really friendly and helpful and cheques can either be paid directly to you or to the vet. It is quite expensive at £17 a month but when I compared it to other quotes I got it seemed pretty good value.

My !!!!! cat is insured through the RSPCA and some of the premium I pay goes to help them in their work which gives you the added bonus of a nice feeling inside!

I think the main message is to make sure the insurance covers any ongoing conditions as this can be the mostly costly aspect of owning a pet.

Another tip is when you get your dog microchipped if you go to your local RSPCA clinic they only charge £15 - my vets had quoted £45!!!

    Hope that helps :p

  • We insured both our (now departed) dogs with Petplan. The only time we had a problem with a claim was when our vet nurse put the wrong dates on the form and it looked like we were claiming twice!!

We had the top of the range cover for both dogs with unlimited vet fees for life.

One dog only lived to 4.5 years but we estimate that in the 18 months that he was treated for epilepsy we got back every penny we paid in premiums during his lifetime.
