Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • I've got a Dell running Windows XP that is nearly 2 years old and has been updated since.:D
It is partitioned into administrator, mum, dad, daughter, son to stop us falling over each other.
I was on-line in the early hours of the morning and the NETGEAR router went mad with flashing lights. So I logged out and switched to "administrator" only to find that some automatic update was telling me the system was about to be restarted to apply updates. So I told it to restart now. (I was under the impression that it was Microsoft that had organised the update, but in my sleep deprived state, I might have confused the AVG & MSN logos).
When the system restarted, I got the AVG Update Manager error as described above.

When I re-logged on at Sunday lunchtime, the problem seemed to have gone away and AVG did a virus database update seemingly successfully.

HOWEVER I have since had two of those "send a message to Microsoft" crashes, that seem to involve "avgwdsvc.exe". (Rebooting the PC seems to return everything to normal)

So if anyone would care to comment, that would be useful. (The only person in this household who begins to understand the inner workings of the system, is my son ; currently away on business.)
