I have a compaq presario v6133 laptop which was purchased in November 2006. It came with a 1 year warranty. The wireless feature no longer works. After doing a search on the internet and talking to Compaq this is a known problem. Something to do with overheating which can damage the wireless card on the motherboard. A design fault. Compaq has offered an extended warranty to compaq laptops which have this and other related problems. My laptop is going in for free repairs. Comapq said they will replace the motherboard. Some users who had their motherboard replaced found that after a few months the same problem happens. Also there is a talk that in future the motherboard will heat up and die and we wont be covered. Supposing the new motherboard does not fix the problem. Can i ask for a refund under sales of goods act/unfit for purpose? Apart from the battery life i am happy with the laptop. Touching underneath the laptop some places are very warm and not hot. Is it worthwhile getting a cooling fan tray which sits under the laptop. I have seen them somewhere years ago but cannot remember where. Any reccomendations?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

No you can't. You have to give them the option to repair or replace first.
  • Wazza im in the same boat as you, although its my Compaq Presario F500 thats the problem the wireless went in it, a neighbour said it was the wireless card that had gone, so i was back using the eternet cable which works fine, then a few weeks back the blue light came back on, happy days!!! S i was back up and runnign again however the next day when i turned on we were back to the orange light again, no netweorks and nothing to connect to :-(. Since then the fan has been on all the time and the underside of the laptop is becoming super hot. My son moved the battery pack the other week and it literally burnt him i picked itup and it was boiling i unplugged it and there was even a tiny spark, the battery back i could smell was literally melting. Anyway i was then on holiday for a week and have come back and now i keep getting it saying the synthetic touch pad has stopped working. Anyway today i seee my neighbour who has read in a magazine about these i googled mine and there were loads with problems. Im on mine now because i have nothing else but i cannot use with the kids here i can't rick that again and i can only charge up for a few minutes at a time and im scared everythime i go near the plug . The underside of the laptop is hot and even the microsoft sticker has started to melt a little.
I bought the laptop from currys in may 2007, but didnt use until dec 2007 due to currys selling me something that was not what i needed, anyway thats another story.
So my 1 yr waranty is out, and there saying its only the v series that is being recalled!

I dont really want to be calling north america and i cant find an email address for them. Luckily Wazza yours seems to be the model they are recalling.

Any ideas, i dont mind if its fixed but my neighbour big computers said the heat will be damaging the touch pad and the battery charher etc and it could set on fire, i dont know what to do, any ideas :-)

  • Purchased a Compaq Presario F500 series notebook that HP has identified with having a hardware malfunction. HP offered to repair it free under the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement but the notebook had to be returned to the point of purchase: PC World in Northolt - being an authorised HP repair centre.
In spite of email print-outs confirming the free repair authorised by HP, the branch manager there refused to take it back - nor did he want to make a phone call to HP for clarification. I emailed customer services at PC World head office and did not get very far either. Wrote to HP in Bracknell who called to say they could not help either !!!!
Where do I go now? Any idea? Thks for yr suggestions, folks

I'd like to know if anymore has come of getting recompense for this problem as I have had it with a now dead £600 HP laptop. I understand there may have been a class action in USA. It has not only cost me the loss of the laptop but having to send it back twice and not being able to use some of my accessories on my newer (win7) machine.

That is shocking customer service - I would suggest writing to PC World's head office.

I would agree, if that hadn't been two years ago
