Some wireless routers (relatively expensive ones, though) have the facility to use 3G as their wan port.

A cheaper, but less convenient, solution is to set up internet sharing on the PC with the USB dongle connected to it. This means that for the other pc to access the net, that PC has to be on. The internet could then be shared either wirelessly, through a wired switch, hub or router, or by directly connecting the machines with a crossover ethernet cable.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Sorry to hijack but I have a desktop pc with virgin media broadband via modem and I've just bought my Dad a laptop. I don't really like the idea of wireless routers so could I buy this product and I'd be able to use the same internet access on my pc and on the laptop at the same time (probably should mention pc is xp and laptop is vista) Thanks.

If you have the wireless network setup right then you should not have any security issues.

For example if you turn on Access control list and set the router only to allow that laptops mac code access and deny everything else than your router will be secure.

Yes using an Ethernet cable will work with your laptop the os is irrelevent unless you decide to do file sharing over your lan then I think vista will still be compatable with a little tweeking.

You can get cheaper off ebuyer or even ebay.
    Kind Regards

Where would I find this setting? At the moment I have the router on a WPA setting rather than WEP. Also when I turn the laptop on and click connect to a network it is showing more than just mine so I am presuming that neighbours (?) don't have a secure network and that's why I can see them. If I have the WPA setting on does that mean they can't see me? Thanks
