Apparently it's happening everywhere right now so is a fault with avg, best to wait till they fix it i think.0

Yes, same here, but only on Vista Machine, not on XP.0

yahoo answers gave me a way to sort this out1. Open AVG user interface
2. Select tools > update from directory
3. Navigate to the original install directory (typically c:/program files/AVG/AVG8) and hit OK"

I have tried the above 3 steps mentioned but the process enact that it worked well. In reality it is not executed perfectly to give a solution. If you want to check this, after the entire process of 3 steps, try updating again from the tray icon. I'm sure you'll not be surprised to see that .bin file error appearing again and the size of the update file is still showing the same.
It's not the main reason I guess, the bin file that is required to update, has a missing script or unable to understand the update script, which is being updated by the Software. We should wait for the next fix that is going to be released by AVG this time.

I don't seem to have a problem but then I had downloads from the avg site before going through those steps.
you'll find updates here
yahoo answers that I've referred to has instructions although the link to updates on it don't seem to be workinggo to the site
make a directory on your desktop called AVG
download AVI: 270.6.4
download IAVI: / 1616
move the dowloaded files to the directory you made called AVG
launch AVG
select tools -> update from directory
select the directory called AVG where you put the downloads
