Taking part of some Fushcia and replanting
Hey,
This isn't really money saving but I need your help. My GF has some lovely orange fuschias in her parents garden but currently it is flowering. Which part of the plant could I nip a bit off to try and grow in some soil at home?
And any tips?
Its either this or buying seeds, but I want to make sure the plants are orange (not purple or white) which I am not sure if you can get in shops? I thought maybe you can only get random colour.

\fushcias take really easily from cuttings.
the books say only use non flowering shoots, but it can often be hard to find any so just nip off any soft shoots that aren't woody, with your fingernails they can be a couple of inches long (tho I was once a demonsrtation where they took miniscule cuttings like 1cm)
take off any flowers that you see and make a cut just below the bottom 2 leaves, this is where the roots will grow, strip off any leaves on the stem apart from the top 2-4. Take a good few, half a dozen say to make sure you get sucess. Put them in a pot of damp compost and cover the pot with a clear plastic bag and keep some where warm but not in direct sunlight.
Alternatively, take cutting as above an put in vase of water, they'll form root dead easy. These water roots don't always take well when they go into compost but most fuschias will be fine.
And it is money saving as it's plants for free!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
I've done the same with some fuchsias at work, all I did was take some cuttings with scissors, about 6 inches long, stripped the leaves from the bottom three inches and bunged them in water. After a couple of weeks three were showing roots, and have now been potted on.
And did you know fuchsia berries are edible? Not to everyone's taste, but free food...!If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

i have a huge fuchia bush and after cutting it right back last year, i just chopped up a few long stems into 2 or 3 inch bits with a leaf on, dipped em in rooting gel and 90% of em grew, even tho my mate (an expert) said 'they wont work'0

It might be too cold in there, kitchen windowsill maybe or cool spare room?
my MIL keeps hers in the garage near the window but hardly waters them, mind you that's the big plants not cuttings, I think cuttings will need more warmthJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
I put my whole hanging baskets in a cold frame, and all the fushias survived and are huge this year. I left them with twigs all winter and then cut them down in the spring.Always on the hunt for a bargain0

Where are you in the country?
You will probably be all right. All the information I read last year stated don't store fuchsias in the house because due to central heating the atmosphere will be too dry.
I'm in the South East so last year I just removed my hanging basket, put it on ground level by resting it on a pot, trimmed back some of the leaves and removed all the buds/flowers, covered it with fleece and put it in a sheltered area outside. I watered it occasionally.
My fuchsias returned more vigorous than ever and I had to re-pot them as they no longer fitted into the hanging basket.
The only thing I've learnt is to cut more off the leaves off as the majority of the old leaves did fall off.
I couldn't actually put them in a cold frame because I didn't have one. And now I have one I've discovered one of my pots is too big and no way am I going to try and sort the roots out.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

You can even bury fuchsias in damp sand/compost mix and forget them, but you have to remember eventually & dig them up again at the right time!
Plenty of decent advice here already, so I'll just say it's no good trying to keep fuchsias by any method if they are already hosting vine weevil grubs.
I use nematodes, as I've tried several chemical methods that haven't worked as well. However, for small quantities of stuff, Provado would last over several seasons and work out cheaper. Apply in September/October, whatever it is.0 -
