If you want the camera, but don't definitely want the 17-85 IS lens, you can pick the camera body up for just over £600 in the UK and buy a different lens. Have a look at the reviews on photodo (specialist lens review website) or dpreview.com.

That's unlike imports I've seen before, where it is the customer who bears the risk (and reaps the reward) with regards to having to pay VAT. Somehow it seems shadier to me for a company to try to directly profit, although morally I know there's no difference.

They can't (legally) charge VAT as they are not domiciled in the UK.

As others have said for such a small (%) saving I think I would buy in the UK. I would be looking to save at least 20% ON THE PRICE TO BUY FROM hONG kONG.
