Thanks for the explanation paullwill8, sounds like that's what has happened. I will take your advice about the watered down paint. Is the medium pile roller still ok to use?

john0612 is Dulux matt a cheap contract matt? Would I be better getting a trade version, still water that down?

    Thanks for your help.

    all the best Si

Tbh you are better off getting a cheaper brand of paint for the first coat that you are watering down and you are better off using a short pile on smooth walls. With medium pile and long you are likely to end up with an orange peel effect (having said that I don't tend to mind orange peeling as long as its not too heavy)

'Gliddens' Contract is very good for this, its non vinyl, very thick, so you get more for your money when you thin it down, it costs approx £16 for a 10ltr tub from any Dulux decorating centre, it is part of dulux, I use it all the time in my jobs.

You can get away with a med pile, the you mainly get the 'orange peel effect' is if your paint is too thick.
If you thin each coat, and use a med or even a long pile, you wont get the orange peel, I never do, but I'm used to it, just add water and thin.

IMO, its far better to have to do an extra coat for the better finish, than trey and get away with either one or two thick gloopy coats, which will look awful on the walls.

Just make sure you don't put too much pressure on it when you use the roller.

As above, it's very common for new builds not to bother with skimming a boarded wall - they just use Easyfill to cover the joins and paint away - saves them a fortune.

    Hi all,

Spent the last week correcting my errors!!

Rubbed down and filled all the damaged areas with polyfill fine filler. Sanded and then coated each area 3 or 4 times with watered down Gliddens trade emulsion. Then painted both bathrooms, ceilings and window reveals with watered down paint, giving each area a good 3 or 4 coats.

Has come out really well. Thanks for all your help. Would heartily recommend Gliddens trade paints, stocked at Dulux decorator centers. And the staff are very good as well.

Have a nice bank hoilday weekend. All the best Si

Thanks for coming back and telling us how you got on, its nice when people do that.:D

Am pleased you were happy 'gliddens' ( I even have the T/shirt), seriously I have lol.

I swear by 'gliddens', thier undercoat and satinwood is fantastic, the gloss, I am not impressed with as much, but the price you pay for the emulsion, whether contract or vinyl, UC and satinwood is so cheap compared to the big names like 'Dulux', and the funny thing is, 'Gliddens' is 'Dulux' but was originally made for the american market, fantastic paint, for a fantastic price.:D

How shoddy is not bothering to skim the walls when it was built?

Makes you wonder what else you'll come across!

Thanks again for the advice. Always try and get back with update as it must help others to know the advice is sound!

Ixwood, you're not wrong there mate. Had leak in the ensuite from the built in cistern. This must have been present from when it was built as it was a slow drip, about 2 an hour!! But eventually the lino lifted from the floor. Just got it redone through the insurance. This is why I was painting to get everything up to scratch. Now I have got close up to everything the shoddy work really is shocking.

I know its not just mine as a couple of friends have also moved into other new places and one has had no end of problems. Can't see these places being around in a couple of hundred years!

    All the best Si

    Misgrace,

Sorry but what is the difference between contract and vinyl. Any places where one should be used and not the other.

    Cheers Si
