Passport Panic

We fly off to Hong Kong on 26th August and I've just this minute discovered that my 20 year olds passport is only a 5 yr one ( I could have sworn we paid for a 10 yr one :mad: ).

The thing is it expires January 2009 so can anyone tell me if this presents a problem when entering Hong Kong. I've heard that the Americans aren't keen on letting you in if there is less than 6 months to run on your passport so was wondering if that's the same all over the world.

its not all countries that have a minimum of 6 months but i can not for the life of me remember what the staus is for hong kong - will go look in my aiport pack later and see if i can find you an answer if no one else knows

Yep im sure that you will need 6 months left on passport on your return date but i am certain there will be someone along soon who will definetly know.

Not much consolation here but I am pretty sure you can only get a 5 year passport for an under 16, so you probably didn't pay for a 10 year one...... at least you have a few days to go to the passport office or get something sorted ....good luck;)

OMG. I don't know now if her passport is classed as a child's passport because she was just under 16 when it was issued. If it is then I assume we need what is classed as a 1st adult passport and neither the fast track or same day service is available for that :eek: . I haven't a clue what to do now.

I found the Foreign Office site

and it looks promising and we will call them and the Hong Kong embassy in London on Monday but what they say and what the immigration officials at the airports say could be 2 different things and i really don't want to risk being turned away.

USA isn't six months either-I flew in January with 3 days remaining on it.
Travel agents talk a lot of rubbish about everywhere needing 6 months and it simply isn't true.

Drive to your local passport office and renew as son as poss............
Dont take a risk with 5 months to go...
My passport had 5 month to go when i was due to go away...

When i rang tour operator, i was told it was a personal gamble, even if the country says you can enter with six months left, the airport passport staff can still refuse you to fly,
i was given an example of some one refused a flight with 6 months left on his passport, to Holland!!!

You will pay quite a bit extra for same day service............ But its worth it.. peace of mind..
