I'd also check what the policy is re passport validity for the particular airline you're flying with.

Regardless of what the country you're travelling to says, the carrier can refuse you boarding if you don't comply with their regulations.

I've visited the BA website and they seem to be happy with her passport but yes we will contact the Chinese tomorrow. I think though that DH will be trailing her to the passport office anyway on Monday to try to get it renewed.

  • Think I may have the same problem, looking at going to HK in November but passport expires in March so don't know if I need to re-new it.

I very much doubt whether you'll get a sensible answer from the Chinese embassy (they will know the rules for China, but probably not for Hong Kong, and anyway they may not want to tell you). Telephone BA, who have a good database of the regulations for the various countries they serve. Even better, seek advice from Cathay Pacific: a high quality airline based in Hong Kong. If anyone knows, they will.

DH rang Hong Kong embassy today and got an automated press 1 for this press 2 for that line and eventually got through to an answer machine. He left a message but is still waiting on a callback.

He is taking DD to her appointment tomorrow with the passport office so hopefully that's her new passport sorted. Had to get photo's taken again though because after checking with the local office they said her specs are apparently too small and even when she has them pushed right up the bridge of her nose they said the frame was too close to the iris of her eyes. Boy are they fussy
