Not entitled to...

Tuition fee loan, maintenance grant, or even the bursary.

I have 2 previous years study(Fdn Degree leading to current degree course), and less than one term from a course I dropped out of.
I have had 7 terms worth of student loan, but nothing else. It is utterly confusing how this prevents me from getting grants or bursaries for the first two years this time round.
My point is, all the money I've had I will have to repay - yet first time students can now get £3k's worth of money they'll never have to pay back!

Any help anyone knows of?

What course are you going to do, and how long is it?

Unless you had extenuating circumstances leading to you leaving uni after one term, that would be counted as a year.

You are entitled to four years of funding, so in theory you should still have one left.

I know this isn't you're point, but not all students get money they never have to pay back... I was generously given only £299 in grants for this year.

Your comment leads me to believe that you're starting another degree from scratch. I wonder why you're not topping up your foundation degree to a full academic degree, which is the normal way to progress in this situation? As dmg24 says, your one term of study will count as a full year so you are looked upon as having been financed for three years out of a possible four. Obviously that will mean that you'll have to pay for the first two years of another three year degree.

Can you not go down the top up route with your foundation degree? It would make your finances very much simpler and save you two years of study.

The point is, I guess, that some people would never actually stop studying if there was no cap on entitlement!

Students also pay a lot more in fees now, which in many cases outweighs the grants.
  • It is a top up of a sort. Basically the fdn degree gets me onto the 2nd year of this course. The course is Sports Studies, with the aim of doing PGCE immediately following the course.
Rachelra, £299 would be much appreciated by me.
Bestpud, I am also paying the fees students are paying nowadays....and also I understand that there needs to be a cap, but the difference here is I'm not even getting a grant to begin with.

So are you saying that you won't get any funding at all for the 2 years of your degree or that you'll have to self fund for the first year(which would've been what I'd expect)?
  • I'll only get student loan for the first year(L2), and perhaps some more for the second year(L3) as it will be my 4th 'year' of study.

    No nearer understanding it though.

Well, that sounds as if they're not counting the year in which you only did one term as one complete year. Normally they count that as a complete year so it looks as if you're lucky.
  • They are counting it as a full year. I think they initially expected me to do the 3yr course, so said nothing was available for the first 2 years of the course. However I am likely to start on the 2nd year - getting only loan - so probably get grants in 3rd year?
Hopeful of some positive news on a bursary from the university though...

A bursary for sports studies?

Could I ask on what grounds you will qualify for this?
