Laptop for mature student?

Options
Hey everyone.....Im really sorry if this is in the wrong place / not allowed!! If it is please move/delete....I wont take offence, I just didnt know where else to post!!

I have had some marvelous freebies from links on this forum and for these I am truly greatful....but here is my problem:

I am a mature student and last September I enrolled for a full time course at my local college studying for my A-Levels. This has been great fun even though I am 23 and the vast majority of my class-mates are 16 or 17.

Anyhow....I have just recieved my AS-Level (first year) results and I am very pleased......but I really need to get a laptop to help me during my second year. It will help me complete coursework etc and will enable me to work whilst commuting etc which will allow me to work my way through college!! (I am working evening and weekends to help get through it)

Basicaly I am asking if anyone knows where I can get a free or pretty cheap fairly good laptop?? I dont need anything spectacular...just good enough to do assignments on etc.

I looked at getting one connected to a broadband package....but when I checked I found that our current broadband contract runs untill January and I could really do with a laptop before then.

Im really sorry for the long post.....but a laptop really could help me get the grades I need to get in to a decent uni.

Any advise will be really greatfully recieved.....even if is to go away.

  • You can get one with a new mobile phone contract
  • I dont know if they're still doing this but if you sign up to a contract with AOL at carphone warehouse, they will give you a free laptop?

I'm sure thats what it was
Could do with winning something.. Haven't won anything since Aug '09!
  • Hi, thanks for the replies:)

Unfortunately my broadband and phone contracts do not run out untill next year and I cant afford to pay for two contracts:(

Get yourself an Asus EEE. Less than £200 and fits in your handbag/manbag.

If you take out a mobile broadband contract at Carphone Warehouse they are giving away free laptops, and you'll be able to get online from anywhere.

  • hey everyone....thanks for the replies so far:)

I will definately look into that suggested laptop!!

I really cant get a broadband or mobile phone contract because my current ones are not up untill next year!!:(

I know there are offers of a free laptop when you sign up for these but unfortunately I cannot take advantage of these untill next year and I really need a laptop before then.

    Any further advise really welcome!!:)

    Your local freecycle!!!!

Freecycle is great as people give away loads of usefull stuff everyday and sometimes that includes computers/laptops. Seriously though maybe if u post it on your local freecycle you may be lucky to receive one. But don't expect it to be brand new

Another thing you could do to is gather stuff from your local freecycle and sell it on ebay or cash converters to make the funds for a mobile broadband contract.

I'm sure the freat stuff they give away can add up to the amount needed and theres your laptop.

    Heres the link

    Hope this helps :)

  • Hey CLLC...thanks so much for your replies:) I have posted a "stuff wanted" message on two of my local freecycle groups down here in sunny Cornwall this evening:)

Hopefully something may come up!! I still have about 3 weeks untill we go back to start the second year so I still have some time!!

I would like to say a massive thankyout to everyone who has posted advise for me here!! I was really nervous about posting this thread because I was really concerned about sounding like a scrounging g*t!!!! But everyone here is so friendly and you have all tried to give me some great advise and point me in the right direction......thank you:)

Any further advise is obviously very much appreciated!!:)
