catz, that must be so frustrating! At 19 he's too old for Connexions, isn't he?

the one thing I would say is that it's never too late to take up studying again. And that he doesn't HAVE to stop. Is it worth him seeing if he'd be able to transfer to evening classes in at least some subjects if he HAS to get a job?

and can someone help him through an 'entitled to' calculation to see if working just over 16 hours would enable him to live and still study?

I realise it's less than ideal, BUT it sounds as if he's already come through a lot, so hopefully he won't give up without a struggle.

Hi Savvy_Sue, it was Connexions that told him all of this, I'll suggest to him about evening classes but he's checking everything he can - not giving up without a fight :D

    Thanks :D

If he has to move onto JSA he might manage to swing it for a year. He needs to be going through the motions of looking for work and being available but it can take a while to find something suitable and he probably won't get too much pressure for about 6 months, it really depends on his advisor. Obviously he'll need to say that he'll give up his course if necessary. He wouldn't be able to manage this for a full 2 year course but until next spring it's probably doable.
