Thanks again everyone. So, do we think that it was the oil pressure that caused the cam belt failure or vice versa? Or is it one of those things that will never be known? Not that good with cars myself and want to understand what when wrong for when I call the dealer again!

anyone know a site that tells you when your timing belt should be changed? my clio 2004 is on 39300 miles now,but coming up for 4 yeras old?,also is it a interference or non interference engine?

it should say 50k or X amount of years,usually 4 or 5. whichever comes first.

You mentioned earlier the oil just poured through, this means a hole in the engine which is normally a result of no oil pressure so a con rod makes a break for freedom.

I’d go for failing oil pressure which caused a con rod to exit the block and the cam to seize thereby snapping the cam belt.

To be honest it doesn’t really matter. You were driving it home after buying it so sale of goods dumps all the responsibility firmly in the dealers lap

You will find the info in the service book. If you don't have it, ring Renault with Reg no. and vin no. - they will know.
