How many nappies do you need for a newborn?

I'm in an MSE/shopaholic quandary. :money:

Our first baby is due in 5 weeks. I've signed up with all the baby clubs (tescos, boots etc) & used the vouchers they send out, and we have a bit of a mini nappy mountain in the baby's room. i.e. about 2 packs each of huggies size 1 & 2, and pampers size 1 & 2. I've got a feeling this may already be more than we need, especially as we've been told that the baby is likely to be around 8-9lb. But I don't really know!

The quandary is - Mr T has just sent me a bunch more vouchers which are for the size 1 & 2 nappies only, which annoyingly expire about a week after my due date. I'm not sure whether to use them now, or if it'll just be a waste of money. Can anyone give me an idea how many nappies a newborn is likely to get through? I've looked on google but all the links that come up are on sites that are promoting reusable nappies and I'm sure they are overestimating!

Oh and baby will hopefully be breastfed in case that makes any difference?

  • Depends on the size dont it, and what goes in, three times the amount comes out :D And if the vouchers are for any size, get bigger ones, the wee one will soon grow into them;)
  • Tesco are great for swapping nappies if you find your baby has grown quicker than expected and you need the next size up. If in doubt though I'd go for the bigger size as you'll need them eventually anyway.

One nappy per feed, plus the odd poop, and they feed often in the first days (weeks) (months). I could get through 10 to 12 nappies a day in the early days, so a pack might last me 3 or 4 days

(I use reusables mostly now, saves a lot of lugging nappies back from shops!)
  • You can expect a new baby to easily get through eight nappies a day, especially with BF poonamis!

    Hi
I had a baby 5 weeks ago and had 4 packs of size 1 nappies ready. They lasted a week. DS was 10lb when he was born as well so he grew out of the smaller nappies really quickly. I would definitely buy size 2's just in case he is bigger - they normally do for 7-13lb or so.
We went through about 15 nappies a day for the first few days! Now down to about 10. Breast feeding really goes through them quickly!!

On another note, we just use own brand nappies during the day (lidl, tesco, boots) as we can change him quickly and pampers at night (they seem the best) to save a little money

    Good luck!! x
  • My youngest is two now but as a baby he went through about 8 per day. We used pampers at first but found they were less absorbent than Lidl and Netto nappies which were surprisingly much better and much less expensive

I bought one large pack of newborn size 1 nappies for DD then went on to size 2 for the next 6 weeks or so. If I was buying ahead, I would look out for offers then buy bigger (size 3) as they will definitely get used.

    Hi

I found the own brand nappies great when they were little but do prefer pampers when they are more active as seemed to fit better

I bought 6 packs of the newborn size and used 5 before needing the next size. There are always offers on at various places so I didnt bulk buy too many.

10-12 nappies is what my little one went through when he was born 3 months ago. A breastfed newborn baby can feed 12 times a day. (I didn't realise work out the maths that this is every other hour.)

I would go for the size 2s. My friend had a 9lb baby and she went onto them straight away. The size one pampers are always on special offer somewhere (to lull you in ) normally 2 for £6 for the 27pk so if you find you can get away with the size ones when the baby is born you can always get some more.

I used pampers exclusively for the first couple of months but now use own brand during the day and pampers at night. Once they start sleeping better at night you only need to change them if they are pooey or really wet.

Nappy bags - I use economy at home as they are only going in your bin. In my changing bag I have economy and own brand. If the nappy goes into a bin I use the economy bag and if I have to take the nappy home I use the stronger own brand.

I think pampers and huggies are pretty much the same price everywhere so if you buy them in boots you get 4% of the price as points. I think you get double points when you activate the voucher you get from baby club? My baby brain can't remember.
