  • Firstly, sorry to hear about your circumstances but you have been very brave and you should be proud of yourself and for standing up for yourself and not letting yourself be a victim. :T

    ok,
I am perfectly willing to sell the car, but am concerned I will find places to rent hard to come by for obvious reasons, ie bankrupty/no DSS. Also I don't think £2000 would be enough for the 6 month advance deposit they'd probably require.

I'm sure I could find work soon, but this would go against me renting as well as the bankruptcy. I did not have a problem with my current landlord as I have never paid late in 11 1/2 years.

To be perfectly honest landlords tend not to be too bothered about bankrupties/DSS as long as they are going to get their rent. You will be able to get a great reference from your existing landlord so that should impress and 11 1/2 years is a long and very respectable amount of time. As for DSS, landlords usually don't want this as they don't want their details being held on files if you get paid direct i.e. they pay into your bank account and then you pay landlord they won't even know.

Also simple problems like hiring a van to transfer belongings are not so easy for a bankrupt.

You are discharged so no longer bankrupt, you should have no problems getting a van for hire as long as you have the money to pay the hire costs.

Remember you have done your time as a bankrupt, you are now discharged you have a lot more freedom. Also, I have never heard of a bankrupt being refused a van hire, they get paid at the time.

I hope this helps and make sure you keep your head up, you have not done anything wrong, the only people to blame for the number of bankruptcies and dischargies are the banks with their high charges and their constant bullying to take out additional cards, loans and re-morgages, they must have known at some point consumers would fight back and now we are!

Go to the council and tell them what's happened they should rehouse you if you are in danger. As for estate agents ring all of them in your new area and see if they will take you. I've just been made banknrupt and my estate agents wont renew my contract so i'm moving. The new estate agent just wants a guarantor who earns more money than me but a couple of other estate agents said it was no problem.

    Hi Storminbalder,

I know it's not going to help in the short-term but you should be eligible for compensation under the "Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme".

I'm not sure what the time scales are but you need to register the incident and complete the necessary paperwork; it doesn't happen automatically.

  • Thanks again for all your replies and encouragement.

Just to let you know that I am feeling more positive and proactive. Been very busy actually. Have sold car and have spent most of today looking at flats and talking to estate agents. Am going away for a couple of days to go view as many as possible.

My mum and her husband volunteered themselves guarantors when I explained my wanting to move, and I didn't need to ask so am very happy about that.

Still a bit of worry though. I have mentioned to a couple of agents that my credit rating is poor, and they say that it won't matter a jot with a guarantor. But can't help thinking they may still balk at something as extreme as bankruptcy. Hope I'm worrying unneccessarily though.

Am stunned also by some of the fees they expect. Including the cost of an extra credit check for the guarantor it can be as high as £250. Shocking eh.

Anyway, I hope you don't witness me moaning on here again any time soon. Thanks again.

Life is a journey........as we walk down the path we discover obstacles....some easy to negotiate, some not so easy. When we encounter those obstacles it is easy to think we cannot overcome them. But when we look back and see the path we have already travelled, we see that we have already overcome obstacles just as big, and we survived, and it actually made us a stronger person.

You WILL get through this - and you will come out the other side in a better situation, however crap it may be at the moment. Things are already looking better for you, with your Mum acting as guarantor etc, letting agents sounding positive and so on.

I hope you are able to continue your life with a little less stress in the future!!

    Good luck with the move!!

If the case is still active, have you got a liason officer to speak to, as they will be in a position to back you up and may be able to add extra clout to the situation. xx

    Hi,
Having been in a similar situation in the past, I know a little of what you are going through. Unfortunately the morons of this world are not likely to let up and perhaps a fresh start somewhere else is the answer.

As a semi retired part supply teacher, I agree the work has been drying up but it goes through phases and you could be run off your feet in October. September is usually quiet.

I am with the county and also an agency, the advantage of the latter is that you get paid within a couple of weeks. Join a couple.

Have you thought of applying for full time, part time or contract work? I rang county when I wasn't getting any work and finished up at a school for eight years full time!

Don't forget private tuition can be a source of income.

There is also the Teachers Support network and you might be able to get some financial help.

Anyway I hope some of the above is helpful. Don't let them get you down. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Oh and one other thing. Some LL have a 'no bankrupts,' clause in their agreements but most are more concerned with having a reliable tenant and having a reference from your present LL will go a long way and as you have guarantors, I doubt there will be a problem.
