Hi,
I hope someone here can possibly help me...
I live in a flatshare and we had a Sky broadband+tv package for a year, under the name of a previous flatmate who has now moved away (before I moved in). Now the contract has ran out - first the TV and then a few days later the internet just died (it still connects to it but there isn't actually any internet).
My flatmate claims that there is nothing to do about this contract because it's in someone else's name and there is no way of transferring it to his name. I desperately need internet in the house but I will be moving in a month, and none of the other flatmates wants to take out a year contract in their name, because of the commitment.
The best option for broadband (I don't really care about the TV) seems to be NewNet or Plusnet (according to the article on this site), because it's a monthly contract, but I don't understand whether, if I already have the sky equipment, I will have to pay the 40 pound installation fee, or is there some way to use it?
I have tried typing in the MAC number on the skybox into the newnet website but it says I have the wrong number - the format seems to be wrong!
Is it true that if someone takes on a 12 month contract with sky there is no way of transferring it to someone else's name?
I have convinced my flatmate to take a monthly contract in his name, but just wanted to ask if anyone knew what the best way of dealing with this all is?
I would appreciate help so much!
Thank you....

You will have to pay the installation fee, the MAC on the router is not a MAC to migrate from one provider to another. To get a MAC to move providers you would need to call Sky cancellations, explain what has happened and ask about getting a MAC from them to move to a new supplier. IF the account is in someone elses name you will have all sorts of problems sorting this out. The previous account holder should have sorted this before leaving.0
