Can't get Council housing!!!!! any tips

Long story - cut short
was in coucil flat for about 3yrs, when our two boys came along thy kept getting ill, later found out it was damp and mold in there room (kept getting it and all the coucil done was paint over it) so we had enough and went private. has been find for past 2yrs (kids ant been in hospital ONCE). Now since everything is goin up we are finding it very hard, tryed the coucil to get back into a 2/3 room place - (the reply i got)

Your application is live on our waiting list, but you have 0 points. This is because you are seen as adequately housed where you are. When people are private renting with the correct number of bedrooms for their size of family, they are seen as not having a housing need, so 0 points are awarded. If any of you have medical needs, you could complete medical claim forms, this would be the only way of obtaining points.

nothing there for financial problems? any ideas, our rent is going up and will start the debt (after me working hard to get out of debt)

any help would be great......

  • In reality you will not get council acomodation unless you are homless. As you are living in a rented house and paying the rent.
unfortunatly for you there a lot more people in a worse situation than you. Untill your situation is as bad or worse than thiers you will not get a house.
Saying that you could try different councils some use a bidding process now, but that would mean you leaving your area is that an option.

It doesn't work like that here in Sunderland. Gentoo do choiced based lettings, they score based on past record paying rent as well as need.

Whatever happens do not get into financial difficulties with your rent as this will definately go against you with regard to council housing!

Are you eligible for any Housing Benefit as your rent is going up?

Unfortunately council housing, which was intended to provide decent housing for the working classes, is only available to people who are either already in it or who are in desperate need (i.e. already being made homeless).

A better system, in my honest opinion, would be to allow anyone use of council housing up to a certain number of years in their life, and remove secure tenure thereafter.

For a practical suggestion, negotiate hard with your landlord, let them know you will leave if they put the rent up and if they don't change their mind, move somewhere cheaper. If they say the new rent is a fair rent, show them the comparators from the area.

    Kelrick,

Rents arn't going up, you're landlord is just being a !!!!head.

Tell him if he deosn't put the rent back to what it was when you moved in you'll find somewhere else, and he can enjoy a few void months without any rent.

Rents are NOT rising. Asking rents are rising acheived rents are falling.

You letting agent will lie to you and tell you otherwise, but just shop around and tell them to go screw themselves sideways with a pitchfork.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

if the LL is putting up the rent and you do not have the moeny to pay for this, then therefore you will veer into what is called "reasonableness to occupy" that is that if you are not able to pay the rent, and will fall into arrears, then it is NOT reasonable to suggest that it is a secure home for you & your kids.

However, they will recommend that you apply for housing benefit in the first instance, to see if you can remain stable there first.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Think it depends on different parts of the country, rents are rising in London and the south east.
  • Definitely agree to look at housing benefit as an option :)
