You could use ccleaner. Click startup in the tools menu.

PS You posted this in the internet forum, better in the techie one.

It's just the same in Vista, but you use the "start search" field rather than "run" to run it.

If you dig around in Vista you can get the run... option back on the start menu.

It's easy if you want it:
    1. Right-click on the Start menu and choose Properties
    2. Click on "Customize"
    3. Scroll down and tick "Run command"
  • thanks all for your advice

I always find it easier to edit the relevant keys in the registry, rather than using msconfig. These are the keys in XP, I'm pretty sure they're the same in Vista:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If there's anything I'm not sure about deleting, I usually create a new shortcut on the desktop, copying the command and name from the registry value and data fields. It's then very easy to run the startup program manually or put it back in the registry if necessary.
