Yes you are paying 0.8% more on the increase but you are protected until dec 09. Imo the PG2009 on electricity is a definite saver over the next year and a half.

    Huh?

How on earth can you state somebody will save on this for the next year and half?

    How could you know that?

You are fixing based on the most expensive tariff on the market.

Why would you want to pay the dearest unit rates in the UK?

NIce to see lots of informed debate.
Using energywatch's average consumption figures and energyhelpline, and if the price protection is Dec 2009, got this for the Northern region.

the standard rate!! Only the truly stupid or apathetic are still on that tariff!

Wow, it must be wonderful to live in a world where everyone has internet access, a bank account and no-one has prepayment meters. This is meant to be about offering help and support, or at least honest comments. Being patronising, snidey, and making up facts helps no-one.

I'm sorry but you are missing the point.

Just because you post up what claims to be the best online tariff doesn't actually mean it is the best tariff available for everybody for several reasons.

The most important being that the tariff you quoted is based upon an average annual usage.

Do you know the OP's circumstance? Or the circumstance of everybody in the Northern region?

And why do you mention 'price protection Dec 2009' when that has nothing to do with what you have posted in your Click 5 example?

The Click 5 tariff comes out top in my region yet the standard tariff from my regional supplier beats it but it isn't online.

In fact, gas from my regional supplier and electricity from NPower further beats that!

I think you need to be more informed!

    I appreciate that.

However, for anybody to be able to forsee into the future of the next 16 months in such a market as UK energy is just taking a wild stab in the dark and, with all due respect, an opinion is just not good enough.

Capping is not a proven way of saving money on energy. It simply buys peace of mind and an avoidance of further price rises for a certain period.

    That is not saving money.

Being with the cheapest supplier for your circumstances in your particular region is the proven way to save on energy bills.

Martin seems to advocate on this site that to shop around for everything else is the way to save money-and that is common sense.

Yet for some particularly bizarre reason his advice for energy is different.

Just because Asda may be cheapest for your weekly shop for a period of time doesn't mean you should only shop there for the next two or three years!

In fact, the energy companies very much fear their customers switching on a regular basis as their customer base becomes unreliable and no business wants, or can, operate successfully with such uncertainty.

Why do you think BG have made a huge song and dance about capped rates?

Switching brings more competition into the market-which is essentially why deregulation took place in the first place. Capping goes against this.

Again, capping is not a money saving strategy but switching is, or simply being provided by your cheapest supplier.

I started a thread a week or so ago warning people who fell for the Martin-led hype of fixing your utility bills that BG are absolutely extracting the urine with their electricity price per kw on the Price Protection 2009! On my expected usage I would have been paying OVER 40% more than on my existing Click 5 tariff. Yes, Click 5 will go up but even BG's appallingly expensive standard tariff (the one that BG base all their fix/cap products on) only saw a rise of 9%!! This is what happens when you get a consumer's champion shouting on gmtv that people HAVE TO CAP NOW. Plyaed right into the greedy energy comapny's hands IMO.

PS I'm sure this post will provoke the usual moronic comment from a long-established self-appointed 'expert' and BG-hugger...

Agree... the price fixing would be relevant a year or two ago.. if you could've predicted the future. Also fixing for 2 years by ramping up your prices 30-40% now... does not seem that wise... you'll be paying more for 6 months, the same as you would do if you were on your previous tarriff for 6 months... and a bit over for 6 months afterwards.

So... fixing at 30% really will only be of use if we get 3-4 price rises in 2 years. Maybe we will get such big jumps, maybe we won't be the boost in priced over that time.. for 6 months slightly cheaper bills is stupid imo.

I don't think I am. You called British Gas's standard tariffs the dearest in the UK (1cs called them the most expensive). I proved this was not the case. I admit that click is cheaper, but it does vary and is extremely likely to rise over the next 3 years (yes it may go down too). What I was saying is that you were bandying about words like dearest and most expensive but this wasn't true. It was even less true if you were talking about Fix 2009.
When did I miss the point?

OK, you lost me. Click 5 comes out top (cheapest?), but the standard tariff from your regional supplier is cheaper?

(Raises handbag to chest) Oooohhhh. I'm assuming you work for BG? If so, have the good grace to TELL US you do by putting it in your signature. Declare an interest. At least that way your comments about this company can be read in the correct and informed way. If you don't work for them, do you have shares in them or something?
