How do you get the NHS card?

Hi,

My daughter has got her bursary award through but she's not heard anything about her NHS card, shes got her usual student card but I thought student nurses have NHS cards too? Does she have to apply or get it automatically?
Thanx

Well I know her friend who is also a Student Nurse said she has one and she uses it to get discounts in shops and things. When she ordered a pizza the shop did discounts for ordinary Students at 10% and NHS workers and students they gave 15% she hadn't got her card yet but she showed them her paperwork to prove shes on the course when they delivered it and they gave them the 15% discount. I know a few places do discounts for NHS staff so it must exist coz you need proof or everyone could say they worked for the NHS
    Thanx

  • Hiya folks

Think that there might be some confusion here and its actually a NUS card that you are looking for (national union of students).

These are available usually free from your university / college just by filling out a form and supplying a passport size photo. These get you discounts in many places such as topshop, game and a quite a few more. Just ask in the shop if they accept them as there is too many to list in here.

    :j

    Oh thankyou

Well she started it about 5 weeks ago but she still hasnt got one. Because she had no previous care work experience though, her first placement has to be in an elderly care home so I'm not sure if they have a human resourses there as such. I'm not sure if its a private or council run place. Her next placement will be in a hospital though. Shes glad of this experience though and she will be more prepared when the hospital one comes but I think thats in May or June

  • if your daughter knows what hospital she will be based at, you or your daughter can ring the hospital and ask for human resources....if you just explain she is student nurse at hospital and as a student she has no money and therefore looking to save pennys and would like a nhs card to be able to access discounts...I am sure they would help.
Also thought i would mention for when your daughter starts at hospital that as a student she will prob get a discount in there main restaurant, tell her to find out detail when she starts her placement

Thankyou I'm sure she will do that :)

We also found out today that she cant get free prescriptions or full cover for health costs prescriptions ect and she has no job, no savings, lives in halls and seriously she barely scrapes by. I just dont know how they have worked that out it doesnt make sense that they give bursarys to learn with NHS then she has to pay for her prescriptions ect out of it. I would have thought they would get free automatically
    Thanx
