Vodafone anniversary dates and billing

I signed up to Vodafone’s £20 sim only contract of 600 mins and unlimited texts on 31st July. I took delivery of the sim card last Tuesday the 5th August. My phone is currently locked to O2 but is to be unlocked this afternoon and I plan to activate the Voda sim in it this evening.

I was unsure whether my monthly anniversary date would commence from either last Tuesday when I received the sim card or from today after I activate it. Ie. Thinking that if where to be determined by the day it was received then I would have already lost 8 days of talk time. Eg. This month I would get 600 mins to last 22 days rather than 30 days.

So I rang Vodafone this morning to check and was quite astonished by what I was told. The lady informed me that all anniversary dates on Vodafone begin on the 1st of each month and that if I activated the sim today I will be allocated approx 365 mins (on a pro-rata basis) to last the remaining 19 days of August.

At first this seemed OK as I presumed that since they were only giving me 19 days worth of minutes this month that likewise I would only be billed for 19 days out of a possible 31, then starting afresh next month. But no she said I would be expected to pay the full whack of £20 for a measly 365 mins. She stated I would be required to pay for the whole month of August, from the 1st to the 31st, completely regardless of the fact I didn’t even receive the sim until the 5th. Thus meaning I would have to pay for the first four days of the month before the sim even arrived!

I questioned the logic and legitimacy of such a system as what if for instance somebody ordered a sim only contract on the 25th of a particular month then received and activated the sim two days later on the 27th. Would they be made to pay £20 for just 3-4 days worth of minutes? I can understand them charging me for the days I wasted between taking delivery of the sim and getting my phone unlocked / using it as that’s my fault but surely they can’t be allowed to charge for days before I even received the thing in the first place!? I put that to her but all she could say was that all mobile phone companies operate that way and it was my fault for ordering the sim at the “wrong time of the month”.

This seems totally absurd to me. I would be most grateful if somebody with knowledge of Vodafone billing could set me straight on the matter.

I've had experience of this before, and they won't charge you the full amount, they'll deduct the cost accordingly. Just double check when you recieve your bill, if they have charged you the full amount, query it again.
  • Don't do Vodafone.
    Leave before you get hassle.

They have just put up their out of allowance call charges by 300%.
Min call after inclusive mins was 5 pence, now 15 pence.
Vodafone answer "we are bringing our charges in line with other networks"

    O2 are :
The minimum call charge is 5p for calls not forming part of your inclusive allowance.
    baldly going on...
