What am I doing wrong? I KNOW root veg stores all winter in great condition. Yet it seems like every week I buy taters, carrots & parsnips & every week I chuck out limp floppy moudly MANKY VEG.
Please help me. I have an organic habit, and this is like composting money.
(Yes: I do try & make soup etc but sometimes life consipres against me. I just want veg to be in good nick when I want to cook it. No freezer & that woud defeat the point anyway)0 -
um , how are u sotring it.
i always store mine in the fridge. i buy loads at begining of month and it lasts for nearly 3 week's. i have 2 fridges and the better quality fridge i have to say keep everything alot fresher than the cheaper one. but then it keeps it alot colder.
i do find tho cauliflower never lasts more than a week.0 -
This week the carrots were in a veg rack in the kitchen on that green matting stuff that lakeland sells (gone in the compost, blue mould spots very offputting) and the parsnips were in the fridge loose on a shelf. Very floppy but made into soup anyway.
That Lakeland matting. Sounded fab. Isn't. Save your £££££s.0 -
Hon, drop the organic habit & get down to your local market. Buy what you need & as much as...folk there will be glad to help you & tell what whats in season (ie cheaper) - spuds I find do better in the cupboard in paper bags. Line the fridge drawer with newspaper (not glam but what the heck). take anything out of plastic straight away,it kills your veg. Best wishes0

I buy veg from the local farmers market.
the carrots still have earth on and they keep great for over 3 weeks in the fridge.
One week I washed a few & put them back into fridge, they were yucky within a few days.
Cauli is only good for a week.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
i totally agree take things fromt he wrappers. it really helps in keeping veg fresher for longer.
newspaper good tip. might try that one0 -
My Daewoo American style fridge-freezer keeps veg fresh for a SCARY amount of time in the fridge side, whether it's in plastic or not.
I threw out a pack of new potatoes from Tesco last week that had been hiding in a corner for 2 months! They were still firm and looked the same as the day I bought them.
I keep that fridge set at 2 or 3 centigrade.
I think it's down ot the temperature control - cheap £100 fridges don't seem to do the job - too much temperature variation.
The cheap fridge that's in the kitchen rots veg in a week, so none of it goes in there.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

The lakeland matting works great for me. It lines the vege drawer at the bottom of the fridge.
I buy veges from the local farm shop (which does not have any packaging at all), and my veges last ages.Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate!0
