I can imagine taking a hard line for over limit as its something that all customers should really show some self control over. Was just curious to see if it had happened before & whether they give a reason for not removing it.

You could perhaps get away with asking for the difference between the £16 and the £12 which has been claimed as acceptable, which is what they should be chargin you really.

I recently got capital one to refund the differences between the £20 they used to charge and the £12 it is now.

    They shouldnt really refuse that.

This appears not to be the case with Egg

After a few more messages/phone calls with them, they basically said their T&Cs were £16 for any time you go over your limit regardless of amount. They also only put a block on your account after you go over your limit which doesn't stop you from going over in the first place . If it wasn't for credit card protection on purchases (I do a lot of shopping online) I would have carried on using my debit card.

  • Hi! I have just had a very similar experience. My full repayment is due to be taken on the 25th of each month. On 25th October (a Saturday) I had to pay a high bill with my card. I checked how high that would bring my credit limit, and I noticed it would be over by £7.00, IF the full repayment would not go out on the 25th, it being a Saturday. I also wrote to Egg to warn them.
On 25th the bill was charged to my card, and only on 27th Egg took my full payment for the previous month. However, they still charged me £16.00!! I am puzzled, and I think that this looks a bit like a 'grey zone'. Has anyone ever had such a problem before?!
    Thank you for your help!
  • Credit card companies do have a 'ceiling limit' if you are over the limit, but they will not tell us as customers what it is. If you tried to present a payment that would take you hundreds of pounds over your limit, it would get blocked, but for a few pounds, they don't bother.
