  • I suppose it depends on what you mean by push your Solicitor. There is a difference between keeping in communication & on top of things and being "pushy". I did not mean the latter. Set the trend by returning paperwork straight away. Don't be afraid to call if you haven't heard anything for a while (with a polite request about how things are going and is there anything you can do). Put ringing every other day etc would of course be pushy. I found that the estate agent was helpful at moving things along at appropriate times. Keep him/her informed of what you have done so that they know you are on the ball and can pass it on to the other side. Although it can be done all willing by xmas, I must agree with those above that it may be too stressful to be worth it? Good luck.

    I believe I heard the statistic that most complete in 6-10 weeks. However, it is definitely feasible to exchange within 3 or 4 weeks (I was ready to exchange in 3) and it is also possible to complete very quickly (some say this can be almost simultaneous, but certainly within days - although this quick completion is what Solicitors charge extra for).

    We are in exactly the same position as the OP. FTB buying our house, the house we're buying is empty. Hoping to have moved by now(process kicked off end of sept). Solicitors decided to wait 'til last week to ask for verification of ID(we hold none of the requested proof of ID)Sorted that out, but still waiting for search results for the house we're buying. This is the only thing holding us up now, just hope the results come back soon. Really there's no telling how long it will take to get to completion.

    I was a first time buyer and bought a flat last year(scotland) that the owners had already vacated.
    My offer was accepted on 2nd November and I got the keys on the 17th!

    So 2 weeks from offer to completion. Saying that my mortgage lady and my solicitor were both brilliant and really rushed through the paperwork etc and my solicitor persuaded the surveyor to do the survey in between other appointments the same day my offer was accepted.

    Also I would like to point out that I wasn't pushy with my solicitor it was actually his idea to rush it through as the vendors were desperate to sell and they sold to me for £6000 below the highest offer they had because my solicitor said we would complete in 2 weeks. It was on at offers over £42000, wth a view to sell for at least £50000 I got it for exactly the surveyors valuation £46000 bargain!

    Oh and my solicitor didn't charge any extra for working faster my solicitors fees were £140 and this was covered by a cash back offer from my mortgage company. I think I ay have just been lucky in my choice of solicitor though will definately use him in future(he is from a big company too).
