British Gas New Boiler offer

I have just had a rep round my house from British Gas to give me a quote on the fitting of a new central heating/water boiler system that i had heard about from a letter sent to me. This work also icluded the flushing of the radiators and the removal of the old etc.
Looking through this site i see people are a little upset at quotes for around £4000. I have just been quoted £5100 (minus the customer £800 discount?!) and told that with 120 payments of only £80 a month the system it is very affordable. The rep them proceeded to print out the quote at which point I then realised that I would be paying back £9600 over the 10 years. That is over double the cost.
Does this sound extortionate or am i badly underestimating the cost of this work.
I'm now having to call up and cancel the work (prey for me that goes well) and am feeling very stupid.
What do you think?

    Hiya

sounds a right rip-off. British Gas are dearer full stop I think. get some quotes from independent plumbers/heating engineers. and sure you could get a loan for a lower interest rate than that.
  • You know you are always advised to get more than one quote for any project, and 3 or 4 for something like this would NOT be stupid.
You don't spell out exactly what you getting, but if it is only a boiler change then consider that a top quality Glow Worm Ultracom Hxi 38kw can be had for around £750 + Flue etc (Although list price may be more). Then add how many days to install at how much per day?

If it is for new radiators and hot water tank and controls etc, then you might get nearer to £4000. Maybe £5000 in the middle of London if there is loads of work about. But remember, house building has ground to a halt and there are supposedly lots of trade people looking for work.

    Hi there,

I had a quote for £2,800 from npower and i got 12 months buy now pay later for free! They were really quick at getting a guy out to quote and he wasn't pushy. I got a vaiiiant boiler with 5 year warranty in with the price. Give them a call 0800 0722 999 - i recommend.

I've just had a Woucester Bosch Greenstar 30si supplied and fitted for 1680 pounds for 1680 pounds including vat. This also included a free full 5 year parts and labour warantee.
Just needs to be fitted by a accredited installer off their website for the warantee BEFORE end of August.
  • Many thanks to you all for replying. I have cancelled the British Gas installation, which went far too easily lol. I'll give all the above companies a look. Cheers guys:beer:
