Store Cards

  • I love these boards.

You get your backside well and truly whipped when you believe the original poster could have taken steps to avoid the situation.

If you go back to my last post, I did say that the company concerned might well be to blame.

The only thing I ever sign is the receipt (where there is still no Chip and PIN) when I have used my debit card.

If people who use these boards are too weak to say NO, or even walk out of the shop, then that is down to them. Yes, companies do employ dodgy tactics.

    So you avoid them.

If I want large electrical goods I try to do it online. I don't work for them but Argos have never been a problem for me. They've plugged their card when I've been paying at the till numerous times, and I've said 'no'.

In relation to the fashion thing and male card holders, they are weak men. I'd happily buy things for my girlfriend or wife, with money I have rather than money I don't.

Feel free to criticise as I am aware that having a different view to most is pretty much not allowed on these boards and draws the threat of modified posts from moderators.

After all Britain has become a bit of a dictatorship.

    A bit of sadomasochism.
    A bit of self praise
    A bit of understanding.

    What more could one ask.

    Wow...this post has fired up!

To BBA....!  Your a true pure brit at heart it seems although you will deny it...dry wit, blunt humour is what being a Brit is all about! :D  hehe!

To all the others....I'm not plugging comet, but I absolutely favour their service.  They are much more flexible and I have a really good rapport with a local store, recognised and known on a first name basis.  I'm always haggling - getting great deals and situations, which really do favour me.  Have even won compos with them.  I say this all bearing in mind that people are quick to criticise rather then mention goodness in individuals or services.   John Lewis is another favourite.  Clearly, avoid the young unwise trying to pull a fast one muppet staff retailers abuse your time with, they learn the hard way when you move on to another colleague.

It’s prudently wise to infrequently at least hear out what retailers credit services are. They do improve over time; sometimes work in your favour, more so it improves your streetwise credit knowledge ability.   Even if you have cash ready as the original poster indicated,...I have managed to haggle prices down considerably for example when buying a car or say a sharps fitted bedroom and then even more on savings taking out their credit options.  You really do get a fantastic discount that way, as they believe they will recoup the money back from the credit interest.  It is little known that it is possible to then repay that credit agreement within the first few weeks using your cash or manipulated 0% card or whatever.  Win-win.

Another example.....recently, I bought a cheapy surround sound system for my pc, £100...not too much to haggle on, but I said before handing over my credit card for payment "....give me £15 off and I'll open up a store card?"  It worked sweetly, no problem....snapped me up straight away.   The stores make a positive hit on their credit Profit/Loss as they have targets to meet.  Saved 15% instantly...beat that!! :D

Another trick also mentioned on this site is to buy vouchers in advance on a 0% with cashback card.  The advance vouchers give you a 5% discount straight away.  You then haggle like crazy in stores and produce those vouchers.  A friend saved around 7% on buying a plasma recently before he even entered the store.  More saved then on pricematching and other sweeteners they throw at you after haggling.  The biggest safety is you can always walk into the store should you have any product issues.....all this is all hard to achieve over the Internet!

Loads more is possible....knowledge and haggle is the way!  Think out of the box people!  Get wise, get clever and hear them out and milk and play those systems, educate yourselves on services out there...it is only to your advantage...

As also mentioned elsewhere on this site....we have become a nation of accepting stuff the way it is...haggle more people!!  But be civil and nice...it works wonders also.
For Lopo, I am a bit confused that you put a store card is better than a (6-week) loan? Would you mind explaining a little more please?

    To Lemon girl...!

Well,....I doubt there is anyone who would offer a 6-week loan product. I've yet to see such a thing out there. Badly worded sentence I guess & apologies. Was trying to emphasise to teeldee the oddity of someone from a credit lender perspective why someone would be needing such a small (tumble dryer!?) loan which would be visible on your credit file. A store card would be more sensible as a product to have over a loan since it may be reused without further credit searches when you next shop with the retailer as opposed to making multiple loan applications as the original poster thought (resulting in multiple credit file hits) whenever you buy something big-ish. Depends if your a frequent shopper with the chain. Swings and roundabouts I guess....each to their own...

    To Angela...! :P
Nothing personal. its your mothers fault I guess.(Wonder if you'll get this far!! ? hehe! ;D )

Just my take on things....if you disagree or can improve upon.....please feel free to coment/vent!

    Angela...!

I take it back...and offer my humble apologies now that your previous post intentions are clearer!

I thought you were being rude - hence my comment and swift side jab at your upringing(!) following on from Lemongirl who seemingly thought the same that you had no time to read my previous long-ish post!.....your previous post could be read two ways looking back at it with hindsight!

Hope we are cool! ?! :)
