Quote to remove a gas fire

Any help much appreciated:

We want to get a gas fire disconnected and the pipe capped off and made safe. I know I am not allowed to do this and it has to be somebody who is Corgi registered. I phoned a chappy last night who said it would cost around £100 - £120 (+ Vat of course) which seemed quite a lot for what should be a pretty quick job.

It's a coal effect gas fire with easy access to the pipework, I will clear everything ready for him to arrive and I will dispose of the fire once he is gone.

Dose this seem a reasonable quote?

Cheers

I forgot to mention that I live in the South East so no doubt the quote will be higher here than in less civilised areas of the country ;)

Thanks, I thought it seemed a bit on the high side. How long did the job take?

The job will take no more than 30 minutes.

We would charge £50+vat for that job, and we are in Essex (fully booked up though).

    UPDATE:

In the end we had a guy come around to do a quote for a new fireplace, he had the old one out in under 2 minutes. Got his gas tester gizmo out gave it all the all clear and total charge £0.

The guy who wanted to charge £120 +VAT really was taking the p*ss, it really is such a shame that tradesmen like him give others a bad name. I appreciate we have all got to make a living, but some people really are beyond a joke.

  • How can a company (jcorbygas) be that busy that they cannot spare one hour to do a small job,Is it because the price you are charging £50 makes it not worth your while? Which in turn makes your price wrong!Would you spare the time if you were charging £120-00??

Good morning: Long established company with a loyal client base and reasonable rates = fully booked during heating season. Don't see why you are having a pop at jcorbygas:confused: ..having a bad week in the world of electrics?

  • Thanks Canucklehead - as you say we are busy looking after our existing clients that is why we are fully booked, not because we cant be bothered to come out for £50!! If I went through this years calendar to see how many times we went out for NOTHING this year just to reassure our customers or do something silly for them like turn up their thermostats you would not be having a pop at us.
Are we not allowed to make a decent living when my husband took 5 years to get his apprenticeship, pays out for Corgi registration each year, has to regularly update his qualifications and be available to our customers whenever they think they should contact us ie Christmas Day

Oh well, must finish now - I have to go and chill another bottle of champagne to drink in our hot tub tonight and talk about our next holiday in Dubai!! or is it Mexico - cant remember- we must make so much money as we cant go out the door for less than £100 per hour!!

To be honest I can't see many people travelling from Essex to Sussex to do a quick job for £50.

The guy wanting to charge £120 lived a whole two miles from my house so I
guess with fuel prices what they are he was worried about the long journey.
