How long does it take to defrag?

Options
My hard drive has been defragging for 24 hours now.

Any ideas if it will ever finish?

    If you have a screensaver set that may be causing it to restart - ?

    Are you using the computer while it's defragging?

    Marty's made a good point, but if you're not using it, is the disk very full? The defrag utility needs room to move the files around, so if there's insufficient room that may be causing the problem. What does the header at the top of the dialog box say about the capacity and free space and so on?

    If there appears to be plenty of space, press CTRL + ALT + DELETE and see whether it's still actually running or whether it has hung.

    Limelight,

    are you using the windows in-built de-fragger?

    I tried it a few times and it was s**t.

    Try Executive Softwares Diskeeper.

    Takes a few hours the first time, but after that do it regularly(I de-frag once a week) and it gets quicker

    Older versions of windows had a mega-slow defrag tool. XP's Service PAck 3 has actually vastly improved the defragger, so if you're on XP, make sure you've got SP3 installed and it should be a lot quicker...

    Defrag should take less than 6 hours!

    If it's over that then start in safe mode the defrag...
    and unplug the network cable!!!! (Stops auto updates that !!!!!!s up Defrags!)

    <start Geek mode>
    get Linux it does not need defraging,
    Well once every year if you're paranoid about it!
    </end Geek mode>

    Limelight why are you defragging? Unless you've turned it off Vista automaticlaly defrags in the background. Also unless your disc is very fragmented defragging will make very little difference to the performance of your PC.

    If you want a quick defrag for Vista try this

    BTW BillTrac, of ocurse your defrag gets quicker, the disc is going to have very little fragmentation if you're running a defrag every week.
    It's my problem, it's my problem

    And it's my problem if I have no friends
    And feel I want to die
