Very sweet stray cat- advise please

A cat came into my house yesterday morning, wondered around and ate the cat food that my two had left lying from breakfast. It was a bit timid, but very sweet. When I stroked the cat I could feel it was very thin and saw it had some nasty wounds that looked like bites.
I went out and put the cat out. Late afternoon it reappeared. My cats were out and it had a wonder round the house, spending some time on my bedroom window ledge. I have a very territorial male cat and later the two of them had quite an argument in the garden which the stray seemed to win.
When I fed my cats, I offered the cat some food. It was clearly hungry and ate the whole tin.
I phoned the local cats protection league. It was not on their 'lost' register and the shelter is full. They did say they would pay for vet treatment if I could take the cat to the vet. The cat disappeared last night and re-appeared very hungry again at teatime. I gave it another tin of food and took it to the vet. It has had treatment (and more food here!) and is now in the garden in conflict with my male again.
I don't want another cat. I have two already. It is very sweet and affectionate and obviously hungry and neglected. I have tried other shelters but can find no places. The cat is not microchipped.

have you asked any of the shelters if they have foster homes for cats to go to when thier shelters are full. well done for taking care of it though, thats how we ended up with a second cat because the neighbours moved and just left it.
or is there some one you know loking for a cat to adopt maybe.

It might be wrth putting a 'found' notice in the local shops and/or paper, as someone might be searching for him. If no one replies, then maybe ask around to see if anyone you know could look after him? Well done you for feeding him and making sure he is well.0

Go on keep the stray !!
I always say, 'I dont want another cat' but a stray turned up at our house and I kept her, she had fights with my other ones for a few weeks but is now part of the family. You know you cant turn a sweet cat away, looks like she picked you by arriving at your house, so maybe someone up there wants you to look after her !!
Sorry, I am a sucker for a stray animal.

our family always re-home strays!!! i am so glad that i got the last one that turned up at mums house!!! he was scruffy, missing fur and really thin. turned out he needed a thyroid operation and all sorts but now that his problems are sorted out he is the best friend i could wish for.
how someone could leave / kick out such a sweet loving cat is beyond me - the vet thought that it may be because the owners couldnt afford the £500 for the operation...
cats protection did help me out with the costs as he is an elderly gentleman and is classed as one of their 'golden oldies'. i obviously pay for flea stuff and jabs but that really is a small price for such a lovely fellow to come home to!!
well done for feeding your stray and contacting vets and C/P - please pop some notices in your local shops - i lost one of my cats and she was missing for 5 and a half weeks before we found her (we moved house and she escaped).
one of the things that people round here do is post a notice on the freecycle website for their area - lots of caring people who will also check with neighbours and friends - you cannot offer animals but you can put a found notice on there!!it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:0 -
Thanks everyone. I will put up some notices. Checked with all the usual places he might have been reported missing. I have asked about fostering, but these places also full.
He came back mid afternoon and ate another tin of cat food. I also managed to worm him at this time. He wanted to come in, but my cats were both out as I had wet paint at floor level and needed it to dry (house going on the market on Friday). The garage - with cat beds- is open for them to use if they want to be somewhere inside.
After another fight with my male, he is curled up in a laundry basket in the garage asleep on the pegs! There is no sign of either of my cats which is unusual at this time of the evening and a bit worrying. I hope he hasn't scared them off.0 -
My OH had a stray turn up, he was very timid at first but decided to adopt OH as his pet, he now visits on most days and quite often stays over and sleeps on the bed, and then along came my puppy, we introduced them, and the cat now named Ben has slapped the puppy a few times and isn't bothered at all.
The puppy is very possessive but he has to live with that.
So go on take him in, he's chosen you to be his new petLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
