  • Today, I had a pub lunch job with wine and pudding, then I went to assess an energy supplier's stand in another store, which wasn't there but I will still get paid, and it meant the report took 2 seconds, and then a clothes shop where I got £10 towards my new clothes.

I joined a couple of mystery shopper companies but decided against due to the self employment hassle. How does eveyone else manage this? I work so I don't know what the tax implications would be for me.

If you are a basic rate tax payer, you would pay tax of 20% of your MS profit. If you are a higher rate tax payer, it would be 40% of your profit.

Profit = (the fee + expenses paid) - (purchase requirements + mileage + car parking + printing + any other expenses)

You have to keep records in simple accounting format, and then submit a tax return at the end of the tax year, which isn't as scary as it sounds!

Only you can decide if it's worthwhile doing though.

If you are earning less than approx £4500 per year from MS work, you can apply for a small earnings exemption certificate which means you won't have to pay NI on your MS income.
Here I go again on my own....
