I wonder if those against automatics gearboxes are also against auto choke, auto advance and retard, synchromesh gear boxes, electric starters, windscreen demisters, heated rear windscreens, heaters, electric windscreen wipers, electric windows, anti lock brakes etc. etc?

Probably, they are all a tad sad to be honest. They seem to be of the opinion that you have to have a gear lever to make the car operate to its maximum. They obviously have a seriously limited driving experience of automatic cars.

Ok some may be slow - but that doesn't only apply to auto's - I've driven many stick shifts that I have felt the need to get the horse whip out to!!

i very much doubt that anyone would be against most of the things in your little list.
    why wonder about that?

But that doesn't mean it isn't a 'proper' car if it is an auto - as previous poster said.

I don't know what you drive but mine kicks down lovely. Alot of cars - ie Toyota Supra, which i drive at weekends, is also an automatic and leaves a lot of cars standing, so you can't accuse an auto of being slow versus a manual!

I agree, neither a manual nor an automatic is more 'proper' than the other, that's just silly. ;)

However, a Toyota Supra is (allegedly) a fast car overall, regardless of the transmission it has. I made a comparison between two identical cars with identical engines, the only difference being that mine is auto and boyfriend's is manual. His is faster than mine. Here are the cars in question:

    The manual:

    The auto:

But hey, cars develop. Diesels as old as these cars were pretty slow, noisy and smoky but modern diesels are (I am led to believe) quick, quiet and clean. I have no doubt that autoboxes have improved since too. :)

I like my automatic, very fond of her. But I prefer driving my manual. Other people prefer the auto. :) World would be boring if we all liked the same things. :)

You gotta be able to handle a car to drive a 4x4.

If you can drive a bumpercar at the fair you can drive an auto:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
