I've been driving automatics for over 20 years, I've never put the car into neutral at anytime, I put my foot on the brake, nothing more. The only time I touch the gearstick is to put it in Reverse, or into Park when I am done driving.

All this into Neutral and using the handbrake malarky is something drivers of manuals do to keep their hands busy. Automatic drivers just use the brake. :)

Each to their own. In slow moving traffic I use the automatic as intended. When I come to a level crossing or roadworks where there is likely to be a delay in excess of a minute I choose to exercise mechanical sympathy and save fuel.

Totally agree, what is the point of driving an automatic if you are going to play at driving a manual.

Jeez, next people will say they use the hand brake to do a hill start!

On very steep hills I use the handbrake to help the transmission. :p:D

  • You leave your foot on the brake, unless it is night and other road users are queuing behind you - in which case you take your foot from the brake, and apply the parking brake.

There is no reason to take it out of drive - the gearbox or fluid will not overheat. There is no significant degree of wear.

Constantly moving from D to N will be the cause of more wear than leaving it in D.

    Ok Goldiespanners...

Correct procedure, neutral, handbrake on. Also, if you get shunted up the ar5e, it is safer.

Trouble is, us Autoists, rarely do that above procedure... :o its too much effort :D
