Children not interested in toys at all

Hi all

Anyone else with this expensive problem? Every birthday and Christmas they get lots of toys from friends etc and they very rarely play with them. They are the right toys for their ages, but still they just seem to stay in the toy box. I have played with them trying to get them more interested, but no. Nothing

I'm going to sell them on ebay, but it seems odd that they don't like toys. They do love the outdoors, books, being creative, puzzles, the computer and tv. I assume this won't affect their imagination in play?

Anyone else have this problem?

I don't want to sound an old fart but kids get too much nowdays and there is too much on tv and game consoles seem to totally absorb some kids so they don't make their own entertainment. It's a real shame but seems to be how it is.

I agree sell it and maybe take them on a nice day out together with the cash.

I agree with Mandles, my kids are the same although they are 10 and 8 now and only interested in consoles. Not only are they not interested, they dont take care of their things.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My two are exactly the same. I think kids have far too much and I think they must find that overwhelming. I've given up buying toys for my two; they love books, so I buy them books, and then for birthdays I take them for days out instead.

Its good to hear what others are doing so that they have less stuff. I wish my two would read at home, I used to love books as a child.

    What problem?

What more could you want? They are creative, they do puzzles and books. They are so healthy in the head that they don't need the stimulation of toys. Toys are only a means of stimulating imagination and creativity [and against that criterion many, many modern toys are rubbish]. Leave well alone, if you try and fix it, remember it ain't broke and you might do more harm than good. OK, construction toys [lego, meccano for boys and equivalent craft for girls - if you are allowed to amke a gender distinction nowadays] might suit them, otherwise give them blocks of wood and sharp knives.

neither of my kids (2 & 7) play with their toys, they play made up games, draw, make things out of boxes, play outside etc.
For my sons birthday i didn't buy him any toys apart from one figure, i bought him art stuff and books and he loved them.
I also find a lot of the time my 2 yr old is overwhelmed when there are a huge amount of toys to play with, so i keep them all upstairs and bring one or two down at a time, and i find that way she will sit and play for longer.

Mine have few toys too - they just dont play with them. But will play constantly at someone elses house!! They are happier drawing, making stuff, in the garden, in front of the TV (yep, but not for long periods!), playing make believe together etc.

We play games together and stuff (board games or made up ones!) but they are just not toy fanatics. Which in turn is actually beneficial at Christmas time! Makes things a bit cheaper.
  • mine are 8,7,5,4 very rarely play with any toys. they all play imagination type games. they have been playing vets, libraries and high school musical.
I am going to get stuck in to all the bedrooms and turf out a lot of stuff!!!!

Only 1 out of my 6 kids played much with toys. He's 8 and loves little figures of people or animals that he used to make up his own little scenarios with.

Most toys are a complete waste of money but we Parents get sucked into buying them because we feel its the proper thing to do (especially at Xmas)

My 2 year old has a heap of toys he never looks at except when a visiting child attempts to play with them.

  • Hi, My girls are almost 5 + 7 and they have no real interest in toys, like yours they play outside and draw and draw and draw and sometimes they play dolls or occasionally Dr who. They have both got birthdays in the next couple of weeks and with the help of Ebay I will be spending about £20 each on them. This in my opinion is more than enough. I am also very mean in that they don't really have a party as such, more a posh tea. That way I don't get loads of presents I have no use for.

You don't say if you have boys or girls but mine do love beads, it is one of the few toys they actually play with.
    Loving the dtd thread. x
