I try not to think about how much money was wasted but most things went to the charity shop so at least they got some use out of them.

And then my mother-in-law bought them all and brought them to fill my house up with :rotfl:

My 16-month old little girl seems to spend all day trying to get the DVD's off the shelf and out of their cases, and getting stuck under the table rather than play with her toys. I wonder if it's cos she's got so many in the toybox it's overwhelming. I do keep taking some out and putting them in carrier bags but I don't really have anywhere to store them.

At least the toybox is in one corner and I tend to take 2 or 3 toys out and put them in the middle of the room and she'll play with them a bit more then.

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

My little one is nearly 9 now, and hes not interested in toys in the slightest.. He doesnt ever seem to 'play', he'd rather read, play football or make stuff...
I keep getting told by my parents that he's strange because of this, but reading this thread has reassured me...
You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....

  • it seems quite common.

my eldest wasn't into toys much but he didn't 'play' at all really. he had special needs though. my youngest prefers outdoors, and interacting with other people but he will play with his train set if it's on a table. he has just started roleplaying with his toys - getting one of them to eat everything in the shopping basket, or one to rescue another who has fallen off the sofa. he's recently grown fond of his farm set too, and plays with the animals.

at age 2 i'd have said he wasn't bothered about toys, but as he turned 3 he started to play more. it might be worth keeping a couple of things for your son in case he starts playing roleplaying games, but then again he might just play make-believe with his sister.

i do find that when we have too many toys nothing gets touched - it's better to just have a few things.

puzzles, art things etc. are still toys though, and your children are playing - they just aren't playing with bits of plastic.

Interactive stuff has always been the big winner in our house for x4 kids!

Although when they get older, the interactive stuff gets more expensive (is DD2's bday [STRIKE]tomorrow[/STRIKE] today and she's getting a camcorder!!), enjoy cheap stuff whilst you can!!

I think they are probably a bit young to play with toys - my two have loads of toys, but my son (just turned five) is only just starting to play with them really...My three year old prefers playdough or cutting out, or just messing about. The toys which have had the most use are things like blocks rather than the expensive battery operated toys.

My little girl isnt really into toys. At the moment shes sitting in a cardboard box with a cardboard tube out of the kitchen roll playing pirate boats with her telescope. Shes been playing at least an hour with that and has her cuddly toys as her companions.
She will also play outside with a bucket, mud and stones for hours!!
No consoles until she is a teenager--she is 4 now. Dont let your kids grow up too quickly-it just flys in. I want my kid to be a kid

    Hi,

I've got 2 boys (3 and 5). Like everyone else, they get overwhelmed at b'days etc, get excited and then discard everything for old favourites which are mainly cars, they use the boxes new toys have come in for garages and ramps!
We have the added problem that DS2 has his b'day on Xmas day, so he's just flooded with new stuff.
The nest present we got them both this year was a £5 first aid kit each, they have spent so many hours with the bandage that came with it (wrapping injured teddies, dog lead for teddy, track for cars to race on etc). Might just buy another one this year!
  • i think people don't really like to give money or vouchers because it's impersonal, so my eldest has a wish list of books he wants for christmas, then people still feel like they are giving him a present that he wants. i don't think they realise how MUCH more he prefers a book to a toy, and especially when they were younger a few of my relatives even thought the books were MY idea, and that my kids couldn't possibly prefer books to toys

when asked what to get for our kids my sister and i would both say a book voucher please and people would raise their eyebrows and imply that we were being mean, and that books aren't proper presents  and then buy an action man or pokemon or something else plastic then never got played with.

My DD has no interest in toys either and as such we do not really buy her any just art supplies and outdoor activities. The main problem we have had has been at Xmas and Birthdays when we are swamped by gifts. We are grateful for peoples generosity but feel that it has been wasted. They insist she opens the gift and plays with it there and then meaning we can't exchange it for something more suitable.
