I work for VW and it would be about £150 start to finish. Am I correct in presuming it's the flip type? The laser cut blade will be the bit that takes the time, but hopefully only a couple of days. The remote section is usually a stock item as they are similar across the VW range. You will need to book the vehicle into a dealer for the recoding of the keys though. The keys come unprogremmed and will need programming with a new code so that the lost one will no longer work on the vehicle even if found by a not-so-honest person!

This is highly illegal and unethical. The DVLA and police monitor the keys that we supply and check that we have seen the V5 (owners documents) and at least two forms of ID that match the details on the V5.

How do you know you are not supplying theives with keys for vehicles that they want rather than the owners of the vehicle?!?

Fortunately with the VW keys, (as mentioned above), VW have a programmed code that doesnt allow uncoded keys to start the vehicle or deactivate the alarm system. Unprogrammed its just a lump of metal and plastic, but I dont know if all car manufacturers are this security conscious.

Advice for those reading this: DO NOT BUY A KEY OFF EBAY, it's illegal and wont work!!!

Well, ok, put it this way.

Would you like someone to be able to get a copy of a key for your car with out being asked any questions, and download the instructions on how to reprogramme the key (which im SURE you cant do on the newer VWs - 10year and older maybe? Newer cars have internal laser cut profiles which is no longer the domain of the high-street key cutter!), and then just drive off in your car?

We have to log everything on a DVLA form. Customer name, address, ID supplied, vehicle chassis number and registration and key part number required and quantity supplied. How on earth anyone can get by that level of security to sell them on eBay I dont know?!?

You still haven't answered the question, how is it ilegal to trade in them on eBay? And what DVLA form are you using? never heard of it.

Well, its a form we fill in at the dealership that has DVLA and police stamps all over it, but no form 'title'. Maybe it's only for our records, or to scare us into filling all the info in?! ;)

I termed it illegal because I was told that we need all this security information before we can order the key, so cant see how anyone can do it legally? Maybe wrong choice of word?! We can certainly not order a key without all of the information, so dont see how anyone else could bypass that system?

You need an existing key and access to the car to program it. OP mentions that it is a SPARE key lost so will have an existing key for this purpose. Seems secure to me and presumably the manufacturers that provide the instructions in the car manuals. Seems to still be the case with new cars too.
It was the case with older VWs, you could reprogram the spare key with the working key in the ignition, but you cannot do that with vehicles made in the last 8years or so.

By buying from a country where VW aren't so picky. Sounds like it's an in house form. I got a chipped key from a locksmith for my car - he was sent by the RAC, can't see the RAC taking part in a big key forging scandal to be honest.
