    I reckon so

I'm too pig headed to give up so I keep going

Bit similar myself. Though it does get a bit interesting when I'm shouting at the 'lovely' computer.....and my family are shouting at me to sling the thing in the bin. My response is to growl at them a lot and keep going. Been up in the small hours many a time trying to sort a PC out.

Ive been in exactly the same situation with friends computers. Ive tried to no avail so in each case ive wiped the hard drive clean, reinstalled xp and started afresh

If you DO manage to get it working then the chances are every program on the computer will be corrupted anyways due to the viruses

Oh I realise that. Just want to see if I can get the thing working. Its the challenge you see.

I have actually got it up and running. Still going through it though.

I have never failed to remove a virus infection yet and reort to a xp reinstall

only had to do that rarely for data corruptions on boot, or in the case where someones son decided their Pc did not require the windows directory

If you can't get the drive to another PC start in safe mode with networking and download "Stinger" from McAfee.

    http://vil.nai.com/VIL/stinger/

it's a self contained Antivirus scanner that runs in safe mode no need to install just download and run, If you don't want to connect then download stinger to a USB then run from there.

it's not the most up to date but will get most of the big viruses..
