A friend has asked me to try and fix (if possible) a computer laden with various 'issues'. It seems to have enough trojans and viruses to sink the titanic. I have managed to get it running in safe mode and I dare not run it in normal mode because of what I have found.
Well....that and the fact that when I first turned on the PC it promptly turned itself off again. Its luckly I've got it in safe mode at all, never mind anything else.
Have tried to format the disc.....erm.....no luck.
Have tried check disc....erm....no luck.
Currently running spybot....no results as yet, but keeping all bits and peices crossed....literally.
Apart from getting a large blunt object and pulverising it into iddy biddy tiny peices....any suggestions?
On another note...well same one actually. The PC has an XP license sticker on the back. Can I use any xp disc to re-install windows?

safe mode with networking would allow you to try an online virus scanner

but I would personally take the risk and boot into normal mode and
Malware Bytes
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
- If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

The titanic isn't connected to the web. And am currently a tad reluctant to hook it up through my computer via networking. Though it may be safe. Not too keen to take the risk. Suspect you understand.
Spybot has currently found 7 nasties and is still going (1 hour running time so far). We could be here for months at this rate.
Is there anything I can download, pop onto disc, and install in safe mode on his PC?Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

could take the HDD out and scan as a slave in another PC (move the link at the back to slave )
or get one of those USB to IDe/sata leads off ebay and scan itEx forum ambassador

Hmmmm...useful. Will have to have a good think about that one. Brain has gone into bash the thing to bits mode which means I'm not exactly thinking straight.

If you have another working computer (with no viruses etc) connected to the internet, I'd strongly recommend Kaspersky antivirus. They have a 30 day trial period in which they clean all viruses. You can download this from https://kaspersky-uk.esd.arvato-systems.de/arvato/downloadDemo.do?product=21640044
Once you've downloaded, I'd disconnect the infected computer from the network and install kaspersky and run it. It is incredibly effective in detecting and removing the viruses, I can speak from experience :T
If like me you are satisfied and decide to purchase a license, you can buy one from here which is very cheap for a 1-year 3 user license (and they send you the cd as well) http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=24425&category_id=227
Excellent value, hope this helps and you can get your computer back up and running.0 -
On another note...well same one actually. The PC has an XP license sticker on the back. Can I use any xp disc to re-install windows?
Well, I'm no expert on licensing, however I do also have a XP COA sticker at the back and use any XP SP1 cd on it and download the updates once I've activated my copy. It works just fine and I presume it's legal :rolleyes:0
