Which card is it ? And how much do they want to charge ?
Are they offering any additional benefits now that there is a charge ?
They are not charging for the new card. They just want to stop the free for life card I have running now.

IMHO there is far too much competition. As soon as one card started charging, all the others will hoover up the business.
At the moment card companies pay me to open accounts
Quidco have offered £20 for the Post office card, £35 for Amex, £40 for Goldfish, £30 for egg, £8 for MBNA etc
