Sorry to hi jack your thread a bit hope you don't mind.

I've got a girlie puppy who's 14 weeks. Our vet has said to wait for her to have her first season before she is spade. But didn't explain why we couldn't have her done before. Does it make an awful lot of difference? And what age is she likely to be when she does have her first season?

    TIA

There are 2 schools of thought on spaying. Some vets reccomend having pups spayed at 6 months. This pretty much stops the risk of cancer of the womb/ mammary tumours although there is a slight increased risk of incontinence later on in the dogs life. There is also no chance of the dog getting accidently pregnant while in season.

The other school of thought is to let the !!!!! have her first season them get her spayed 3 months later. There is a slight increased risk of mammary tumours if they've had their first season but less chance of them becoming incontinent.

It's really personal preference. My !!!!!es I've had from pups have all been spayed at 6 months (infact I've had one done today).

Depending on what breed she is, some smaller breeds have their first season around 6 months. Other larger breeds tend to be slower to develop and have them later.

Thanks for your advice. I am still searching for a puppy class in my area with not much luck. I have introduced her to a number of friends dogs which she gets on great with now (even a great dane who towers over her) Its mainly on walks if another dog comes to sniff she growls and barks, i'm worried this will result in her getting hurt. I will try what you said about taking her mind off it, and i havent given up hope for a puppy class. Thanks again.

all my previous dogs have been male and my present one female she is as loyal as the male dogs have had and she has been spayed. I adopted her last yr at 8yrs old as was my last dog when I adopted her and i have found no difference

why not adopt a dog rather than get a puppy?

Have to disagree with one post. Our !!!!! never goes out of sight where as our dog will happily dissapear into the woods and re appear 5 minutes later (normally a black colour, but thats not the point....).

We have always had our !!!!!es spayed asap, before their first season. Just makes life easier really!

Girls are a lot more 'motherly' and cuddly, if they are spayed there is no worries about cancer etc.
Boys tend to be a lot more dominant and will prob also mark his territory by spraying! Thou getting them snipped usually solves this.

She definately needs to socialise with other dogs and people as early as possible so please do get her into a puppy class. You should be able to find your local one on yell.com.
